Iga Swiatek continues her title defence with a dominant straight-sets win over Karolina Pliskova on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2026

Iga Swiatek moved her title defence to another level with a straight-sets dismantling of Karolina Pliskova.

The 2025 champion was in merciless mood as she posted a 6-1 6-3 success in just one hour and 10 minutes.

The third seed was given a real scare in her first-round win over Taylor Towsend, but was far more assured here, rampaging into a 4-0 lead before blotting her copybook with an error-strewn service game.

It did little to alter the trajectory of the first set as the six-time Grand Slam champion broke again on her way to claiming the opener in just 25 minutes.

World number 73 Pliskova, who is on the rise again after a lengthy spell out injured, finally secured a hold at the start of Set 2 and then broke for a 2-0 lead.

However, a pair of double faults helped Swiatek to bounce straight back and the third seed turned on the after-burners to reel off four games in a row.

Former finalist Pliskova could not offer the required response with the Pole breaking to love to finish and set up a third-round meeting with Alexandra Eala or Maya Joint.

Swiatek breaks to love with the aid of a beastly mid-court forehand to continue her title defence with a much more impressive victory over former finalist Karolina Pliskova.

Swiatek moves within a game of victory as a barrage of loopy forehands help her to a solid hold to 15.

Too often today, Pliskova has been guilty of over-pressing with the forehand and at 30-30 she does it again here to offer up an umpteenth break point.

Iga tracks down an angled volley but jabs her pick-up wide down the line to let Karolina off the hook.

The 2021 finalist edges out of dodge from there with an ace to finish helping her to stay in contention on the board.

It’s four games in a row as Swiatek backs up the break with a solid hold to 15 to eye up the finish line on her horizon.

Pliskova resists in a heavyweight forehand-to-forehand exchange at 15-30 before firing an open stance winner to the outside edge of the line.

Swiatek continues to read the Czech’s serve well and a rasping return forces the error to make deuce.

Karolina can’t quite wriggle free and steers into the alley to offer up another break point.

Iga doesn’t have to hit another ball to convert it as the world number 73 double faults to put her opponent in the box seat.

It’s difficult to decide whether Swiatek has lost her way again or Pliskova has gone up a couple of levels.

It’s probably a bit of both, but there’s no doubt Iga is toiling a touch.

The Pole opens with a double fault and then leads 30-15 and 40-30, but unforced errors keep pegging her back.

It’s a similar story at deuce, but the third seed finally gets over the line as Pliskova drags a backhand wide to allow her opponent to consolidate via a long and winding road.

Ouch.

Karolina throws in her second double fault of the game on break point to pretty much hand the break straight back.

There’s a different look about Pliskova now.

The Czech is beginning to find her range with the big forehand but then flashes a poor backhand wide at Pulp (30-30).

A super, deep slice has Iga complaining as she miscues off the island under pressure and her mood darkens when she drills a low backhand into the net from deuce to cough up break point.

The Pole can’t rescue herself as a stray forehand fails to find the line and puts the world number 73 in charge in Set 2.

Alarm bells ring for the 2021 finalist as a 30-15 lead turns sour and Iga works her way to break point.

A super, wrong-footing forehand up the line staves it off and the Czech finally delivers some damaging first serves to edge her first hold of the contest from deuce.

Swiatek shows no mercy as she rampages through a hold to 30 to gobble down the breadstick in just 25 minutes.

Pliskova moves 30-0 up with a fabulous wrong-footing forehand but back storms Iga with the backhand doing plenty of damage en route to teeing up another break point.

There’s an air of inevitability about it as the Czech drags a forehand under pressure off the island and one of the best servers on the planet is 0-3 on serve so far today.

Swiatek has been almost flawless today – until now.

The third Pole misfires off both flanks and chucks in a double fault to cough up triple break point.

A bounce smash and a drive volley see her fend off two, but another double fault sees her fold on the third.

It’s one-way traffic so far.

Pliskova simply has not settled and another double fault leaves her with plenty to do from the off.

Swiatek ups the ante with a forehand down the line and tees up triple break point with a rasping crosscourt backhand that the Czech can only jab into the net with a stretch volley.

The third seed has got an incredible read on the world number 73’s serve and fires a return winner deep to the corner to bag the insurance break to love.  

It's all business from Iga early doors as she romps through a love hold to consolidate with real efficiency.

Swiatek launches into the attack on the return.

It makes Karolina nervy and she double faults to open the door at 15-30.

The Pole tees up two break points with a line-licking forehand and converts on the first of them with a searing return that forces the riposte long.

It’s a strong start by the defending champion as she hurries to the net to bat away a clinical volley and swishes a deep, probing backhand to the Czech’s left corner that lures the error and concludes a dominant love hold.

Swiatek will serve first.

Iga Swiatek battled incredibly hard to emerge victorious over Taylor Townsend on Centre Court on Tuesday, and afterwards broke down in tears in her chair.
