Reigning champion Iga Swiatek crashes out in straight sets as Alexandra Eala pulls off major shock to progress to the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2026

Alexandra Eala secured the biggest win of her career as she defeated reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time.

The Filipina star took advantage of a sub-par performance from the six-time major winner to triumph 7-6 6-2 in two hours and 15 minutes in front a stunned Centre Court crowd.

”I don’t know how to describe it, I mean I’m into the second week of a Slam and it’s amazing for me," Eala said during her on-court post-match interview.

"Iga is a phenomenal player and a really nice person, so I’m really grateful to be able to share Centre Court with her at Wimbledon nonetheless.

”I’m really emotional and maybe for someone like Iga, who has won so many Slams, or maybe for someone like Serena or Venus (Williams), this achievement may seem small, but for someone who grew up in the Philippines… (tearful)

”I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks and my light-up shoes and chubby cheeks  - so to her (that little girl) it is everything.

”But because I’m emotional, it does not mean I am satisfied, so next round - let’s go (laughs).”

The Polish third seed broke early for a 2-1 lead, but Eala roared back to take four of the next five games.

The Filipina had set point on her serve but could not get over the line and Swiatek delivered with some trademark forehands to bite back and level.

An epic set was eventually decided in a tie-break with the 29th seed claiming it 11-9 on her fourth set point to secure a one-hour and 25-minute opener.

Swiatek’s game completely fell apart in the second stanza as Eala bagged a double break to race into a 4-0 lead.

The third seed belatedly offered some resistance but could not deny the 21-year-old, who unleashed a crosscourt forehand winner to seal victory on her third match point.

Eala battles back from 0-30 and then throws herself form side to side to stay in the point at Pulp before finally seeing her defences breeched by a crisp drive volley from the Pole.

Swiatek drifts long to allow the Filipina to get to deuce but then ballons a routine forehand drive volley long to hand over match point.

The third seed hammers a backhand down the line to fend it off and then survives a second when her opponent drills a backhand a whisker long.

It’s a rollercoaster game that proves to be a fitting finale to an absorbing match with the 29th seed fighting off a couple more break points before finally clinching a famous victory on her third match point courtesy of a cross-court forehand winner.

It’s another error-strewn service game from the Pole as she throws in a pair of double faults and then volleys off the island on the first of two break points.

Eala clenches her fist and gives her team a knowing stare. The Filipina will now serve for the match.

There’s suddenly a bit of life in Iga.

The third seed seems to have found her forehand again and her footwork has renewed energy about it.

Eala is a bit too passive and ends up surrendering her serve to 15.

Swiatek has one break back and this will now be a big test of the Filipina as she looks to fend off the comeback.

Swiatek strolls to her chair completely poker-faced as she finally gets back on the board.

It’s a long, long way back from here and her game is way off its top level.

The 29th seed stays rock solid from there, remaining calm as Iga makes her hang around before belatedly consolidating to edge ever nearer to the finish line.

The 29th seed jumps into the air in delight as Iga drills a forehand long to drop a topsy-turvy breaker by an 11-9 scoreline.

As a result, the underdog claims the opener in one hour and 25 minutes. What a treat for those on Centre Court!

It’s a breaker befitting the tight set of tennis that preceded it.

Both players come up clutch when facing set point and we head to another change of ends still wondering who will come out on top!

Eala has the set on her racquet at 5-2 but suddenly struggles to find the island and a stray backhand allows Iga to level at five apiece.

The third seed turns the screw with a backhand winner down the line but drags a crosscourt return off that wing into the net.

Swiatek earns the early mini break to lead 2-0 but Eala rushes back with a forehand return winner down the line and ends up reeling off four points in a row to take control at the change of ends.

Swiatek digs her heels in after another poor miss at 15-15 and arrows a brilliant forehand winner down the line to work her way to game point.

The Pole doesn’t blink from there as a smart body serve does the trick to take her into a breaker.

Swiatek is left frustrated as she angles a routine volley into the net at Pulp to miss out on break point.

Eala does not make the most of the let off and extends the examination of her serve to deuce with a plus-one forehand into the alley.

The 29th seed struggles to wriggle off the hook and Iga zaps a leaping forehand to the postage stamp to earn break point.

Eala comes up clutch on serve and is delighted to see Swiatek miss her cue with two returns and it sees the underdog eventually scrap her way through.

It's been a match of fluctuating momentum so far and this opening set remains very much up for grabs.
