Casper Ruud will play Jannik Sinner in the ATP Finals last four in Turin, after he beat Andrey Rublev 6-4 5-7 6-2 on Friday.

The result meant Rublev was eliminated, while it also ousted Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz after his defeat to Alexander Zverev earlier in the day.

Ruud and Rublev shared a competitive opening to the contest, knowing that just one set could decide the pair’s fates as the group stages edged towards an exciting conclusion.

Lose the first set and Rublev would crash out, but win in two and he would miraculously advance after back-to-back opening defeats.

On the other hand, world No. 6 Ruud just needed to win a set to put himself into Sunday’s semi-final clash against top-ranked player and 2023 runner-up Sinner for a place in the final.

The result would also determine Alcaraz’s future in Turin, with the Spaniard - who has been suffering from illness - all but out as the match got underway after his defeat to Zverev, which followed a victory over Rublev and defeat to Ruud.

Ruud and Rublev could not be split in the opening set of their encounter until the former eventually shattered the Russian’s resistance, breaking his serve on his second of three break points for 4-3.

Rublev failed to battle his way back into the set and it was decided: Ruud would advance, no matter the result, while Rublev would head home for the season.

The duo competed in another closely-fought set as Ruud wanted to wrap up the match as quickly as possible to preserve his energy for Saturday's semi-final, while Rublev looked to go out on a high.

Rublev had the chance to break in the 10th game but Ruud swatted away two set points to keep his hopes of winning in straight sets alive.

Rublev eventually got over the line to draw level, but Ruud was too strong in the decider as he gained two breaks to race ahead and seal his second win of the campaign.

The semi-finals will take place on Saturday with second seed Alexander Zverev facing No. 5-ranked Fritz, before Ruud faces Sinner to decide the final.
