VOTE: Who will be the next first-time Grand Slam winners after Alexander Zverev and Mirra Andreeva conquer French Open?

The 2026 French Open saw two first-time Grand Slam winners, as Alexander Zverev and Mirra Andreeva won the singles titles.

Zverev, 29, ended his long wait for a major title with a dramatic five-set victory over Flavio Cobolli.

The German had lost in three previous Grand Slam finals but finally managed to get over the line in Paris.

Andreeva completed a dominant fortnight with a straight-sets win over qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the final.

Andreeva, 19, was competing in her first major final and was tipped afterwards as the "future of women's tennis" by Chris Evert.

Is beaten Cobolli the best bet on ATP Tour?

There are two big reasons why winning a Grand Slam is so difficult right now: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Before Zverev’s win in Paris, either Sinner or Alcaraz had won the previous nine major titles.

With Alcaraz missing the French Open due to injury and Sinner shocked in the second round, Zverev took full advantage to seize his chance.

No-one knows if such an opportunity will come about again, but several first-time Grand Slam candidates impressed over the last fortnight.

Joao Fonseca, 19, made his Grand Slam breakthrough as he beat Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller and then overcame Casper Ruud, a two-time runner-up at the French Open.

Jakub Mensik, 20, also had an excellent tournament, making the semis, and both he and Fonseca look like they could be in the mix for majors in the future.

The two Americans in the top 10 - Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz - didn’t deliver in Paris but have the power to trouble the best in the world.

World No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime admitted to being ”destroyed” after losing in the quarter-finals, but, aged 25, still has time on his side - as does 24-year-old runner-up Cobolli, who is now into the top 10 and will be looking to build on his standout run.

Rafael Jodar, Arthur Fils and Learner Tien are among the up-and-coming players who could contend in the years ahead.

Is Pegula the standout contender on WTA Tour?

Most of the leading women’s contenders came up short at the French Open, with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka imploding in the quarter-finals and four-time champion Iga Swiatek losing in the fourth round.

One of the players who might have been wishing she could have taken advantage was world No. 4 Jessica Pegula, who had made the semis at the two previous majors.

But Pegula, who also lost in the 2024 US Open final, was upset in the first round.

Amanda Anisimova’s first Grand Slam final did not go according to plan last summer as she was thrashed 6-0 6-0 by Swiatek at Wimbledon.

However, she returned to the final at the following Slam and has the game to contend again.

Elina Svitolina, 31, has enjoyed a hugely impressive return to the tour after giving birth and has made at least the quarter-finals at four of the last six majors.

Another Ukrainian, Marta Kostyuk, took her game to another level over the clay season as she went 17-0 before losing in her first Grand Slam semi-final.

Victoria Mboko, 19, and Iva Jovic, 18, are both in the top 20 and look to have bright futures.

Belinda Bencic and Karolina Muchova have already had deep Grand Slam runs and are always ones to watch.
