John Higgins would fend off a late comeback from Mark Williams to head to the Tour Championship quarter final.
Higgins had a good afternoon as he took six frames on the bounce after Williams’ opening two to close the first session, and it seemed like it would continue as he picked up his seventh.
But Williams was able to recover his form and capitalise on some rare mistakes by Higgins and taking the next four.
The Welshman’s luck seemed to waver as Higgins responded with a century of 110 in the 14th frame, but Williams took his own ton on his way to equalising.
Higgins’ penultimate frame was scrappy, and it took a few visits before he was able to nail it down and pull ahead again.
It was a tense affair with a long safety stalemate between the two in the final frame, but once Higgins broke through he was in firm control.
The Scotsman makes his next appearance against Mark Selby, and they will play on Thursday at 1PM.

Higgins flukes the yellow from a snooker, and now he'll try to pot the green from distance. He misses, and Williams will heppily pick it up.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 7-2 Williams (42-30)
Williams tries to put the red into the yellow pocket, but his miss flukes down the table into the left corner pocket. He pots the blue to get on the final red, and he's in a great spot to take the green. He doesn't like the look of the yellow though and he plays a safety.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 7-2 Williams (42-21)
Higgins has some work on his hands, the yellow and green are both on the baulk cushion, and the last two reds are on opposite rails as well. He's done well to whittle it down to this, but he misses his attempt on the red at baulk.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 7-2 Williams (16-21)
Higgins finally breaks the drought but overhits the cue ball, and he won't get the line he wanted on the pink. He picks the black on the top rail instead, and what a beauty! Very tricky and he'll chase Williams' 21 now.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 7-2 Williams (2-21)
Williams plays a very nice safety on the baulk cushion, and Higgins fouls! He goes for a red on the opposite rail, makes it the second time but leaves a chance open to the right corner pocket. Williams lines it up, but he misses his shot.

Higgins pots first again. Williams has yet to pot in this second session, and his task is looking harder and harder.
Williams finds a lovely plant shortly after, and chooses to snooker Higgins.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 7-2 Williams
Piece of cake for Higgins with the rest, and now he goes for the clearance. He rolls in the white off the pink, but he won't need it to pull his streak to seven!
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 6-2 Williams (97-4)
It looks like it's all over now as HIggins makes light work of the table on this third visit. He easily handles the last red on the top rail, and his last challenge will be the yellow near the left cushion.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 6-2 Williams (28-4)
Another mistake, but from Williams this time. He leaves a red open in the mouth of the left corner pocket and Higgins will scoop that up. Higgins then snookers behind the brown, who fouls. He manages to curl the cue ball around the brown and hit the red on his next go, but leaves a pot open that Higgins takes again.

Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 6-2 Williams
We get ready to jump back into this match very soon, who will be the one facing Mark Selby tomorrow?
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins opens up lead
John Higgins reeled off six straight frames to lead fellow "Class of 92" icon Mark Williams 6-2 after the first session of their first-round meeting at the Tour Championship in Manchester.
Welshman Williams made a strong start to the afternoon with breaks of 59 and 121, but could not build on his bright opening as Higgins gradually assumed control of a largely scrappy affair.
Without ever finding pristine form, the Scot managed to freeze out his opponent with runs of 63 and 73 the highlight in moving within four frames of a quarter-final meeting with Mark Selby, who he defeated 10-8 in last year's final. They play to a finish at 7pm on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Welsh Open champion Barry Hawkins won the final three frames from 8-7 behind to complete a 10-8 victory against new World Open winner Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Next up for Hawkins is a last-eight clash with two-time Tour champion Neil Robertson in the last eight.

Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 5-2 Williams (55-33)
Willo looked so good at 2-0, but this match has gradually got away from him. White drops in off the blue. And that will be that. In goes blue and pink. Higgins with a 6-2 lead after the first session.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 5-2 Williams (45-33)
So down to the final four balls. Williams ducking and diving out there. But John drops in long brown. Pop at the blue for the frame then. But just hits the jaws and runs safe. Still life in the old frame yet.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 5-2 Williams (41-21)
John in then with the chance to win a sixth straight frame for a 6-2 lead. But he loses the white on 26. One red left up. Being forced to do his work in bits and bobs. But he misses the green. Didn't expect that to happen.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 5-2 Williams (15-21)
All very tense and testing out there as John fails to drop in a tricky blue to yellow pocket. The power switches back to Willo, who then can't can a longish red. All very scrappy between these two blokes. Williams going off the boil at the wrong time.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 5-2 Williams (13-14)
Another Williams chance crops up, but a positional shot goes awry. And he then misses a tough red to left middle. Higgins has this session by the scruff of the neck out there.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 5-2 Williams (12-0)
Big final frame of the session in progress. John with an early 12, but that means little or nothing.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 4-2 Williams (78-0)
John needed a few bits at the cherry, but he gets enough to put away this frame for a 5-2 lead. Five on the spin for Higgo with one more frame to come before the interval.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 4-2 Williams (42-0)
But he then misses an absolute sitter of a red on 41. Would you believe that blunder? But Williams can't punish as a red to yellow bag doesn't drop. Miles off the angle. Higgins with a second chance to put away this frame, and he then is nowhere near a pot on a yellow.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 4-2 Williams (33-0)
Higgins licking his lips with the way these balls are lying. Little wonder. Just has to operate in areas here. So many reds to go at.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 4-2 Williams (20-0)
John looking more and more at home with this table and the surroundings. Would be very disappointed if he doesn't put this frame to bed for a 5-2 lead.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 4-2 Williams (9-0)
John with a fine pot to the right middle after Mark fails to drag the white back to the top cushion. What a chance for John to continue his momentum in this match. Big chance to build a healthy lead.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 3-2 Williams (73-0)
No century, but a 73 is just the job for the four-time world champion in moving 4-2 clear. Two more frames to come. And Williams is looking for at least one of them.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 3-2 Williams (58-0)
This has been some effort from John out there. Has been far from plain sailing, but he has worked the cue ball quite superbly to leave him on the cusp of a 4-2 advantage.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 3-2 Williams (43-0)
Fair to say, John is playing with his B or C game this afternoon, but has just hung around and looks poised to move 4-2 clear in the battle of the legends.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 3-2 Williams (23-0)
Higgins is on a break of 23 early in this sixth frame. Working hard for these. If he wins this one, he won't be behind heading for tonight's concluding session.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 2-2 Williams (81-44)
So both men have had chances in this frame, but it is Higgins who takes out the brown with the rest. That is the platform for a 3-2 lead in a match that has turned a bit scrappy. That won't bother John holding a 3-2 lead.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 2-2 Williams (49-44)
Higgins pushes the boat out going for a double on a red. Doesn't drop, and he might well have handed the frame to Mark now. Just two reds and colours left up.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 2-2 Williams (26-37)
So a reprieve for Williams out there that he probably didn't see coming. But he then misses a mid-range red. Well, didn't see that coming. Errors coming from both men.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 2-2 Williams (20-13)
Higgins with a bit of a bounce in this step now. Negotiates a tricky red bridging over another red. And nicely on black too. But he misses it off the spot.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 2-2 Williams (1-13)
Off we go then for the second batch of four frames in this fascinating duel. Mark with another fine long red early on in the fifth frame.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 1-2 Williams (64-23)
In goes frame-ball red for John along top cushion, and Mark gives Higgins the nod. Saves him having to get any furniture out from under the table. This match level at 2-2. Hawkins and Un-Nooh also level at 6-6 on the other main table in Manchester.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 1-2 Williams (63-23)
Not much between John and the winning line now. Higgins down to the final two reds.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 1-2 Williams (42-23)
This is an excellent chance for John to get this match tied up at 2-2 heading for a cuppa at the interval. Mark started like a train, but his show has come off the rails a bit out there.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 1-2 Williams (7-23)
59 and 121 in the first two frames from Mark, but John wins a scrappy third. Mark with a majestic long red early in the fourth. Stunning cut on a black, but he then misses an easy red seconds later. Would you believe that? John coming back to what looks like a very appealing table. Chance to score.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-2 Williams (64-33)
John Higgins doing John Higgins things as the required colours are stroked home. He is back to 2-1 behind in the race to 10. One more frame coming up before the mid-session interval.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-2 Williams (50-33)
Down to the final red then. Williams goes for broke down the side rail with the rest, but it rattles the jaws and doesn't drop. John slams in the red at pace. Could be 2-1 now.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-2 Williams (49-13)
But the great Scot is not really cashing in out there as he can't slot a tough red from a side rail. Willo back at the baize.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-2 Williams (43-13)
Williams tries to sink a long red down the table to yellow bag, but nothing doing and Willo then leaves John in all sorts of bother with a quality snooker. But a missed pink to left middle is a shocker for Mark seconds later. Golden chance for John to register his first frame of the day.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-2 Williams (27-12)
John with a lovely long red of his own. What can he contribute in response? Big visit coming up, but he can only make 27. Which isn't going to cut it in this company.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-1 Williams (0-121)
121 of the very best straight off the bat from the Welsh potting machine. Well, Mark Allen reeled off the first four against Judd Trump yesterday. This has the same vibe about it.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-1 Williams (0-95)
Could be a century to start for Willo in this second frame. Amazing stuff from the three-time world champion.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-1 Williams (0-79)
This looks very much like 2-0 is incoming for Williams via the fluked red. Floating them in like he is down the local club. Very impressive indeed. Classy and clinical.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-1 Williams (0-29)
A fine early chance for Mark to build a lead in this frame. In goes a red he missed in the previous frame.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-1 Williams (0-1)
Williams with a huge fluke on a red. Tried to run safe back to baulk but ends up knocking in another red.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-1 Williams (0-0)
Eight frames to be played this afternoon with a possible 11 to be contested this evening.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-0 Williams (16-67)
Higgins returns to table, but can't drop in a red with a rest and the concession quickly follows. A settler for both men. But it is Willo who strikes first in this first-round clash.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-0 Williams (16-59)
Williams threw the cue to the table after missing that red. We know why. Willo will expect to lose this frame now. Higgins very interested now with all three reds in the open, but he jaws it to the same bag as Williams missed. Well now. A reprieve for the Welshman.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-0 Williams (1-59)
But he misses a mid-range red on the cusp of the frame. Well, didn't expect him to miss that.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-0 Williams (1-54)
Every chance now to take out frame in one hit here. Lovely start to the day by Willo. Break speeds beyond 50 as a red to right middle is dropped in.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-0 Williams (1-14)
Bit of a loose one by John seconds later, and Willo has chance to get hand on table at this visit. What is he going to produce? The slow Williams walk is underway in Manchester.
Tour Championship LIVE - Higgins 0-0 Williams (1-0)
Nice opening red by John from distance to show his eyeballs are working well among the balls. Safety is the follow-up choice.
