Jumalon entered Day 3 leading with his chip stack, like he did on Day 1 and Day 2 of the Final Table, and he managed to once again hold his nerve. Although Saaskilahti didn’t make history by becoming the first ever Finnish winner of the WSOP Main Event, he finished second and won $6 million.
The decisive moment happened when Saaskilahti flopped a middle pair and continued betting big on the turn and river, only to be called down by Jumalon, who turned a bigger pair and extended his lead.
Jumalon then began to press his lead until one hand shifted all the momentum and allowed Saaskilahti back into the battle.
Despite this momentary threat to his lead, the 22-year-old expertly closed out the match as he forced the 40-year-old to start going bigger with his plays, with his eyes on the $10 million and the golden bracelet.
Saaskilahti made a final hero call to give him a chance of winning the WSOP Main Event. It didn’t go his way, and it was Jumalon who was crowned champion – the fourth consecutive American to win the Main Event.
