Germany 3-3 Italy result - Joshua Kimmich inspires hosts to UEFA Nations League semi-finals

First-half goals from Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and Tim Kleindienst were just enough for Germany to draw 3-3 on the night against Italy and progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League 5-4 on aggregate.

Italy staged a memorable fightback from three goals down as Moise Kean scored a brace before substitute Giacomo Raspadori netted a late penalty.

Taking a 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Milan, the hosts were in fine spirits, which were boosted by Kimmich’s 30th-minute penalty.

In a dominant spell the hosts put the game seemingly out of reach as Kimmich then turned provider with a quick corner, while the Italians were out of position, allowing Musiala to tap home a second.

The Dortmund crowd were in fine spirits at half-time after Kimmich crossed for Kleindienst to make it 3-0 on the night.

However, Julian Nagelsmann’s side had not expected a strong Italian response as two rifled goals from Kean put the visitors back into the match with 21 minutes left on the clock.

Referee Szymon Marciniak then awarded a penalty against Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck, only for VAR to overturn his decision.

Raspadori eventually levelled the match on the night from the penalty spot, but the Italians ran out of time to pull back into the tie.

Germany will now face Portugal in the semi-finals. Both semi-finals and the final will be played in Germany in June.

Julian Nagelsmann has guided Germany into the last four of the Nations League and had to use every tactic in the book to hold on against Italy.

It really looked like the Italians were going to cause an upset when Kean scored a brace. However, a host of substitutions stemmed the flow before conceding a late penalty which ultimately did not cost them.

His record as Germany manager is now won 12, drawn six and lost three.

The play from Kimmich during the first half was scintillating and was the difference between the two sides on the night.

After calmly scoring the opening penalty he had the awareness to take a quick corner which resulted in Musiala having an open net.

The Bayern Munich winger also crossed for Kleindienst to score a third goal on the night.

What a game of football that was.

From the first to 99th minute it was full of drama and incidents between two of the best sides in Europe.

Germany were emphatic in the first half and their three goals were enough to progress. However, Italy mustered a superb response to score three times and will feel that they deserved a further penalty.

VAR has spotted a handball from Mittelstadt and the referee agrees once he goes over to the monitor.

All is not completely lost for Italy as they have six added minutes to find two goals.

The visitors are still probing for an equaliser on the night. However, the nervousness in the German defence has gone as Baumann calmly collects the ball.

Lucca and Zaccagni are both on and replace Kean and Ricci

Kimmich powerfully hits a free-kick which is take a yard outside the box. Despite only seeing it late Donnarumma makes a fine save.

From the resulting corner Bisseck sends his header just wide.

Handbags between Bastoni and Kleindienst who were tussling as a cross was about to be played into the Italy box. Both players are booked.

After assisting a goal with his first touch Raspadori goes for goal himself and has the goalkeeper beaten, but also the far post.

Raspadori sends a lovely ball into the feet of Kean who takes a touch to beat his marker and then blasts the ball home.
