Mali 0-1 Senegal result - Ndiaye puts Teranga Lions into Africa Cup of Nations semi-final with victory over 10-man Eagles

One of the pre-tournament favourites Senegal became the first team at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations to reach the semi-final after a 1-0 victory over a stubborn Mali side. 

Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye scored what proved to be the only goal of the game mid-way through the first-half when he started and finished a sweeping move down Senegal’s right. 

His goal was in no small way aided by Eagles goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, who spilled Krepin Diatta’s low cutback right into the path of the onrushing forward. 

Mali then helped their opponents once again just before the break when Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card for scything down fellow Premier League player Idrissa Gueye. 

Diarra atoned for his earlier error after the restart with a string of wonderful saves throughout the remainder of the match to keep his side tournament dreams alive. 

In the end, however, Mali, with a man down, were unable to reproduce the late heroics they displayed in their Round of 16 penalty shootout win over Tunisia. 

For the Teranga Lions, they move on to face either Egypt or holders Cote d'Ivoire on Wednesday for a place in the final.

The Teranga Lions keep on roaring as they make it into the last four.

They made hard work of it at times, and were helped by Mali going down to 10 men before the break, but Senegal see the game out and will play the winners of Egypt or holders Cote d'Ivoire for a place in the final.

The Mali goalkeeper is having one of those nights. He keeps out Camara's fierce volley with a truly wonderful stop before denying Mane moments later.

Hamari Traore picks up a yellow card as the fourth official indicates there will be seven minutes of added time at the end of this one.

The Teranga Lions seem content to try and see this one out. They have the ball in the Mali half but they are unable to carve out any real chances.

Mali, it should be noted, scored a 96th-minute leveler in their Round of 16 clash with Tunisia.

The substitute goes clear through after latching on to an under-hit back pass. The Rayo Vallecano defender has options but goes alone and the effort is straight at Diarra.

Camara goes for the spectacular but it sails over.

Moments later, goalscorer Ndiaye goes off, making way for his namesake, Cherif. Diallo also goes off for Ibrahim Mbaye.

Meanwhile, Gaoussou Diakite comes on for Mali, replacing Dieng.

The Eagles have shown their resilience throughout the tournament, meaning this tie, as it stands, is far from over.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, they are putting up a strong fight here.

Mane cuts inside onto his right and unleashes a goal-bound effort that stings the palms of Diarra. From the resulting corner, the Mali keeper saves wonderfully from Ciss' header, getting down low to his right to push the ball away.

A second goal for Senegal would surely seal the contest.

The Senegal boss makes a double subsitution, bringing on Pathe Ciss and Lamine Camara for Papa Gueye and Diarra.

As the clock ticks towards the hour mark, it's still Ndiaye's goal that separates the two teams here. All to play for in the final 30 minutes, with Senegal looking to book their place in the last four, while 10-man Mali hope to cause an upset.

The Teranga Lions defence is caught napping and Mali go close to an equalizer, but Mendy makes an important save.

Diarra is then cautioned.

It's Tom Saintfiet who turns to the bench first. Amadou Haidara, who appears to have been struggling with his shoulder, is replaced by Nene Dorgeles.

A looping delivery to the back post is met by Diallo, but the Metz forward is unable to keep his powerful header down, and it flies harmlessly over.

It's an early chance for the 10 men of Mali. Edouard Mendy has been a bystander in the Senegal goal so far today, but the former Chelsea stopper had to be on hand to keep hold of Mamadou Sangare's driven cross.
