MAN CITY LOSE GROUND IN TITLE RACE AFTER SUNDERLAND DRAW
Manchester City’s eight-match winning run came to an end when they were held to a draw against Sunderland on New Year’s Day, as The Black Cats protected their unbeaten home record.
Both goalkeepers pulled off stunning saves in a frantic goalless contest, and ultimately made the difference as the points were shared.
City thought they had the perfect start when Bernardo Silva notched the visitors in front from close range, but he was quickly ruled offside by the assistant referee.
Sunderland had the best chance of the first half by far and should have gone ahead when Brian Brobbey outmuscled Ruben Dias to break through on goal, before Gianluigi Donnarumma denied him.
Erling Haaland came close to scoring his 20th league goal of the season when his low effort from just outside the six-yard box was saved by Robin Roefs, as the teams headed into the break level.
Man City came out of the blocks quickest in the second half and were presented with a huge chance when Savinho blasted wide from point-blank range, while down the other end, Donnarumma made another big save to deny Mayenda.
City began to dominate in the second half, and substitute Josko Gvardiol came agonisingly close when he hit the post with an audacious flicked effort with the outside of his boot.
It was a frantic end as City threw everything at the Sunderland goal, but the hosts managed to hold on thanks to some more excellent defending and goalkeeping, as both teams walked away with a point.
Pep Guardiola’s side are now four points behind leaders Arsenal in second place, following The Gunners’ 4-1 demolition job of Aston Villa on Tuesday. Sunderland, meanwhile, remain in seventh place, four points off the UEFA Champions League spots.
