SUNDERLAND KEEP UNBEATEN HOME RUN ALIVE, AS BURNLEY WOES GROW

Sunderland bounced back from a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United to keep their unbeaten home record in the league alive after a win against strugglers Burnley.

Habib Diarra looked to have scored his first Premier League goal in the ninth minute, although it was eventually credited to Axel Tuanzebe as an own goal.

Diarra eventually made up for it with another goal in the 32nd minute.

Though the two sides were pretty evenly matched for possession, it did not feel like it to watch – Burnley were sluggish, showed almost no flair, and struggled to prove their worth as a Premier League side.

In the second half, any fire they may have felt during a half-time talk by manager Scott Parker was quickly extinguished as normal business resumed despite a few glimmers of hope.

A stunning strike by Chemsdine Talbi in the 72nd minute put the home side three goals to the good and ended any hope of a comeback by the visitors in what was a truly poor performance.

While Sunderland saw their efforts catapult them into eighth place in the league, Burnley remain languishing in the drop zone, with a chance to fight for three points against West Ham in their next outing.

Meanwhile, Sunderland will face an altogether different challenge against top-of-the-table Arsenal.

WALKER: BURNLEY PERFORMANCE ‘UNACCEPTABLE’

Speaking to Sky Sports, Burnley defender Kyle Walker said that his team’s performance against Sunderland was "terrible". He added:

As a club that’s fighting for survival to put in that kind of performance is unacceptable.

Asked if Burnley had been intimidated by Sunderland's home record, he said:

I think you take that into consideration, but there are 22 men on the football pitch, and it’s who wants it more, and they wanted it more tonight than us.

Asked if Burnley players weren’t hungry enough, Walker said:

I‘d say the hunger is there. The lads work hard day in day out, but sometimes football matches aren’t won on hunger, they’re won by using your head and playing a game of football. Certain situations arise in the game, and you’re meant to deal with them in a manner that’s appropriate for that situation. Now we just, for whatever reason, don’t seem to do that.

TALBI: SUNDERLAND ARE AIMING FOR TOP FIVE OR SIX

Also speaking to Sky Sports, goalscorer Chemsdine Talbi said that Sunderland were aiming for a top five or six finish in the Premier League this season. Of the match and his goal:

We did a great job today. [We had] A lot of passes, a lot of quality on the ball, and today we finished the action well, I think. So [I’m] really pleased with that, and we need to continue like this.

Asked if it felt as sweet as it looked when he struck the ball, he said:

Yeah, for sure. I need to watch it back, but I’m really pleased with it. We train on this every day on the pitch, so today is good. I hope to get more goals.

SIDIKI: 36 POINTS IS 'NEVER ENOUGH'

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Sunderland's Noah Sidiki dismissed a question of whether 36 points would be "enough", adding "we need more."

On the match he said:

It was really important for us to bounce back after what happened at West Ham and I think in front of our own supporters, we did what we needed to do. We got the three points and we can go home with a good feeling.

On goalscorer Habib Diarra he said:

[Diarra bought] lots of energy [and] composure on the ball. That’s all we ask of him, and that’s what he does best. The club did good to buy him this summer, and we’re all happy to see him play here.

NO WAY BACK FOR BURNLEY?

It is hard to see a way back for Burnley at this stage in the season. With just 15 points, they are very far from the oft-quoted magic number of 40. Meanwhile, Sunderland, riding high in eighth place, are pretty much there with 36.

It's almost painful to watch the lack of skill. Burnley are given a free-kick around 25 yards out after a late tackle by Reinildo. Walker takes it and Esteve finds the ball, but the header is poor and that little glimmer of hope is short lived, once again.
