Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle United result – Elliot Anderson nets equaliser against former club as Forest edge closer to safety with vital point

Elliot Anderson struck a late equaliser as Nottingham Forest edged closer to Premier League survival with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United.

Vitor Pereira’s men moved up to 15th place as a result of the share of the spoils and are now seven points clear of the drop zone with two matches to play.

If West Ham lose to title favourites Arsenal later on Sunday evening, The Tricky Trees will be safe.

Newcastle were the livelier side in the first half and should have gone in at the break ahead, but William Osula’s shot was well saved by Matz Sels.

Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi were both denied by Nick Pope in the second half as Forest improved before Magpies forward Osula saw a 25-yard free-kick come back off the crossbar.

Newcastle eventually broke the deadlock 16 minutes from time when substitute Harvey Barnes raced onto Jacob Ramsey’s clever pass and fired home.

However, Forest snatched what could be a hugely significant point when Anderson exchanged a lovely one-two with James McAtee and fired a rising shot into the corner two minutes from time.

The result is a major positive for Forest but leaves Newcastle in 13th spot and dents their fading hopes of securing a European berth.

Next Sunday, the sides play their penultimate Premier League fixture with Forest visiting Manchester United and Newcastle hosting West Ham.
