Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland: Premier League result as Nordi Mukiele own-goal rescues point for Liverpool after Chemsdine Talbi's opener

Liverpool's Premier League season suffered another setback as they came from behind to draw 1-1 against high-flying Sunderland at Anfield.

While both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, they both rattled the woodwork as Trai Hume saw his shot tipped onto the crossbar before Alexis Mac Allister clipped the post with a header.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Arne Slot sent on Mo Salah to find a breakthrough, but it was the visitors who struck first with 25 minutes remaining.

Chemsdine Talbi got the ball on the edge of the box after a loose pass from Virgil van Dijk and saw his shot deflect off the Dutchman into the bottom corner.

Liverpool went on the hunt for an equaliser and found it with nine minutes remaining. Curtis Jones slipped the ball to Florian Wirtz, who skipped past two Sunderland defenders before firing home in off Nordi Mukiele, but the goal was eventually ruled an own-goal.

The hosts, buoyed by a raucous Anfield, went on the hunt for a winner, but nearly conceded themselves after Wilson Isidor latched onto Robin Roefs's long ball, rounded Alisson, but Federico Chiesa got back to clear the shot off the line.

The draw leaves Sunderland sixth and Liverpool eighth, both a handful of points off the top four, but they can both be leapfrogged by Manchester United tomorrow, who host West Ham.

Arne Slot speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it was a bit similar as in the weekend. Again we didn't concede a lot, we didn't create a lot, and today very unlucky with the goal we conceded - a deflection that could have gone anywhere."

On Chiesa's goal line clearance: "I think that's what you want a player to do in that situation, just give everything in a situation you feel you cannot do a lot."

On whether Liverpool were too passive in the first half: "You have to take into account how the other team are playing. They are very, very, very compact if they go low and very aggressive if you press too high.

"A few other very good teams have had problems with them.

"They don't concede a lot of goals and the reason for that is that they are so compact. With so many bodies in and around the 18 yard box it is difficult to find the free player.

On the equaliser that was eventually given as an own-goal: "That was lucky as well but there is a difference between hitting a shot from 11, 12 yards than hitting a shot from 20 yards. It was a good chance for him to score.

"We were very unlucky in the second half but we came back strong."

On Mo Salah's omission from the starting lineup: "That's always the situation. It has nothing to do with Mo. When we face Leeds we need a result again but no clue right now who's going to start."

Curtis Jones, speaking to Sky Sports on whether Liverpool showed more intensity: "I think so yeah. We have got the guys in the team that can play that can score that can assist, but we just asked for more aggressiveness."

On whether Liverpool started too slowly: "At times it has to be slow. We're playing against a team who sat back a bit but the more that we pass it around, it creates gaps and that's where the likes of myself, Flo and Dom can get into the gaps.

"It was one of those nights again where we're missing that small, small bit."

Florian Wirtz, speaking to Sky Sports on Liverpool's current situation: "It's a very good team, and I'm very happy to be here. The last few weeks were difficult for us but we are in a good way to come back and win games.

"We wanted to win today, we want to be on top of the table, we just have to continue, keep the hard work and hopefully things will change."

The pundits have been piling the criticism on the hosts tonight, but the stats suggest they were in control for large parts of the match.

However, Liverpool did not do enough to win tonight, but this is still a point against a tricky opponent and, incidentally, their first draw of the season.

The draw means Sunderland remain above Liverpool in the Premier League table as they sit sixth, just one point off the Champions League places.

Liverpool stay eighth, but will fall back down to ninth if United avoid defeat tomorrow. They are now 11 points off Arsenal at the top, but still within touching distance of the Champions League spots.

What does it all mean? Arsenal are five points clear now, Aston Villa are third, while Leeds leapfrog West Ham to move out of the drop zone before the Hammers take on Manchester United tomorrow.

Roefs was so disappointed when he saw Chiesa get back in the nick of time. Liverpool come forward again.

Van Dijk is playing up front which means Sunderland pose a threat on the break but can't get things together.

Salah wins a corner.

Goalscorer Talbi goes off, replaced by Luke O'Nein. Roefs claims Van Dijk's header and goes down in the process.

Sunderland have not made a successful pass since the 84th minute. But Roefs plays one across the length of the pitch and Isidor is in!

He rounds Alisson and taps home but Chiesa gets back to clear it off the line!

Wirtz wins a corner. Salah finds Van Dijk and Liverpool want a penalty for handball. It hits Le Fee's arm from about 10 centimetres and is never going to be given.

SEVEN minutes of added time.

Jones has been brilliant since coming on. He is central to Liverpool's build-up, exchanging passes with everyone on the right flank.

Salah then finds Szoboszlai in the box but the ball just gets caught under his feet and he can't take a decent shot from a promising position.

Now then, who will go for the winner? Neither side will be satisfied with a draw given how the match has gone.

Hume chips a dangerous ball in and Van Dijk crucially gets there first. Isidor is down after clashing with Ballard in the midst of all that action so there will be a quick break.

It looks like Wirtz's goal will go down as an own goal for Mukiele. Milos Kerkez and Federico Chiesa come on for Robertson and Isak

There's the equaliser!

Jones wins the ball again inside Sunderland's half and slides it through to Wirtz inside a congested penalty area.

The German keeps his composure and skips past one, then two, and gets a fortunate deflection for his first Premier League goal.

Huge weight off his and Liverpool's shoulders

This is getting scrappy now which is helping Liverpool. However, Reinildo goes sliding in on Szoboszlai and wins the ball to stop a promising counter. Gravenberch then tries the same but commits a foul.

Jones then gets Liverpool moving forward but Szoboszlai overhits his cross.

Le Fee goes off for Lutsharel Geertruida. Ten minutes to go.

Bit of a break now as Hume gets treatment. Liverpool make another change, as Hugo Ekitike comes on for Mac Allister.

The Frenchman immediately links up with Robertson but the cross is cleared.

Salah then looks for Isak at the near post but Ballard gets there first and wins a free-kick to boot.

Liverpool have lost all six matches when they have conceded first this season. They have 20 minutes to rectify that.

First, they have to deal with a long throw and do so, but still can't keep hold of the ball.

Wirtz does well to wriggle away and go on the counter but Xhaka comes across to sniff out the danger eventually

The visitors lead and it is a stunner!

Van Dijk gives the ball away and Le Fee shifts it to Talbi. He has enough space from 25 yards out and lets loose.

His shot deflects off Van Dijk and into the bottom corner and Sunderland lead the reigning champions.

Salah is caught between a cross and a shot and his effort just trickles through to Roefs's gloves.

Arne Slot has seen enough, and sends on Curtis Jones. He will replace Gomez at right-back, who was on a booking of course.
