Liverpool 2-0 Brighton result - Mohamed Salah breaks Premier League record as Hugo Ekitike double fires Arne Slot's side to Anfield victory

Mohamed Salah ended a turbulent week at Liverpool by coming off the bench to help Arne Slot's side complete a 2-0 Premier League win over a wasteful Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield as a Hugo Ekitike double secured the points.

Salah, who replaced the injured Joe Gomez on 26 minutes, played provider from a corner for Ekitike to head his side's second on 60 minutes after the French forward had scored the fastest Premier League goal of the season with a thumping finish from a Gomez assist on only 46 seconds.

After a few days that saw Salah dropped from the Liverpool squad for their 1-0 win at Internazionale in the UEFA Champions League due to public criticism of manager Slot, this marked a return to another record-breaking afternoon.

The recalled Egypt striker has 277 goal involvements for Liverpool in the Premier League, consisting of a remarkable 188 goals and 89 assists - a new record by a player for a single club in the competition.

Former England striker Wayne Rooney produced 276 for Manchester United with 183 goals and 93 assists.

He is also third (280) behind Alan Shearer (342) and Rooney (311) for total goal involvements in Premier League history before he heads off to represent his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Liverpool are sixth in the standings on 26 points, behind Crystal Palace on goal difference, but three ahead of ninth-placed Brighton, who must be wondering how they failed to score a goal.

They had numerous opportunities on the counter-attack with their best chance of the contest seeing Diego Gomez somehow clip a post from a couple of yards out early in the second half.

"I think he was a threat," the Liverpool manager told Sky Sports. "The first ball he touched, he almost gave an assist to [Alexis] Mac Allister.

"He was constantly involved, which was pleasing, but not a surprise since he's done that many times for Liverpool.

."It was an easy decision to put him in the squad. I've said many times before what's been said between the two of us, and for me that stays between the two of us.

"He was back in the squad again and we needed him because he was the first substitution I made.

"He assisted for the 2-0, the corner kick, which was also very nice for us because so many times this season we've been on the wrong end of set pieces.

"He goes to Egypt now to AFCON, and that for us means another player down, and we already didn't have a lot today.

"But this is what we knew when the season started, that he would go there and hopefully one or two players can come back from injury, actually I expect only one.

"Next week it's Tottenham away, which is a challenge in itself."

"I wouldn't say it was perfect because I know I could score way more today," the two-goal forward told the BBC.

"The most important was to win in front of our fans. It was a good day at work."

On substitute Mo Salah setting up the second goal: "He gave me a great ball, I just had to be in a good place. It was easy to finish.

"I was looking for the hat-trick, but it is going to be another time. It was good, two goals.

"We try to stick together and work together. Today wasn't easy. We had to stay compact and stick together. I think we deserved it.

"We did a great week and let's continue."

Plenty of them throughout this contest as Salah just overhits a pass looking for Robertson on the break and Verbruggen is off his line to gather.

A nice way for the Egypt striker to head to Morocco for the finals of that tournament. Better feeling all round.

Excellent break by the home side. Chiesa on the charge for the Reds, but the pass to Salah is not converted as he clips over the finish when he looked destined to score.

Chance for Brighton to make stoppage time a bit more interesting, but Ferdi Kadioglu drives the finish over the bar after twisting and turning.

He gets a warm reception from the home fans with Diego Gomez making way. A couple of probing crosses from the visitors, but Liverpool are equal to the task in clearing the danger.

Alexis Mac Allister this time in needing of a visit from the medics at Anfield. Still 2-0 to the home side.

Federico Chiesa replaces Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been nursing an injury of his own.

Charalampos Kostoulas replaces Georginio Rutter with Danny Welbeck on for Jack Hinshelwood with the clock the big enemy for the visitors.

Alexander Isak replaces Hugo Ekitike and Andy Robertson is on for Florian Wirtz. Liverpool almost over the line.

Mats Wieffer bounds onto the Rutter pass this time, but can't direct the finish on goal. High and wide of the target from an acute angle. Story of the day really.

Plenty of bodies trying to find a way back into this game, but Liverpool hit on the break. Salah and Ekitike then Wirtz can't get a shot away before the cross by Szoboszlai is grabbed by Verbruggen.

Ferdi Kadioglu with a probing and dangerous cross, but Alisson is equal to the task in punching clear for the home side.

Minteh flies into an advertising board in trying to get the ball across the face of goal. That looked painful, but thankfully he is back on his feet quite sharpish.
