Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal result - Dominik Szoboszlai fires Liverpool to victory with stunning free-kick winner as Premier League champions move top

Dominik Szoboszlai slammed home a stunning long-range free-kick winner in the closing moments to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory over Premier League title rivals Arsenal at Anfield.

There appeared little danger when Martín Zubimendi was booked for fouling Curtis Jones with 83 minutes on the clock in a frantic heavyweight battle.

But Szoboszlai had other ideas as he despatched a wonderful dipping free-kick from 32 yards out that eluded the Arsenal wall with visiting goalkeeper David Raya left with no chance diving at full length as the ball went in off his right-hand post.

In a game of few chances, Arsenal had the better moments in the first half after losing French central defender William Saliba to injury in the fifth minute, with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker halting a Noni Madueke volley before the break.

But the home team were livelier in the second half and got their reward late on via the Hungarian midfielder's powerhouse winner that sees them move top of the table with three wins from their first three matches of the new campaign.

Arne Slot's side return to action at Burnley on Sunday, September 14 after the international break.

But Mikel Arteta must lift Arsenal from suffering their first league defeat to Liverpool in seven matches when they host Nottingham Forest, live on TNT Sports and discovery+ at 12:30pm on Saturday, September 13.

In the final analysis, the visitors were probably unfortunate to leave Anfield without a point after suffering their first away defeat in the Premier League since losing 1-0 at Newcastle last November, a run stretching back 15 games.

"This shot I didn't practice in the past few weeks because we were shooting closer," said Szoboszlai on Sky Sports.

"I had to take a risk and shoot a little bit harder because I knew [David] Raya likes to jump behind the ball.

"He is an unbelievable goalkeeper. If it goes a bit more inside, he saves it."

The Liverpool match-winner expects Arsenal to bounce back from their first away defeat in the top flight since losing at Newcastle last November, a run stretching over 15 games.

"Of course," he said. "They had an unbelievable season last season, and of course, the two before that as well.

"It's a compliment, always to keep on going behind, with [Manchester] City, with us, is really hard and they always do it.

"They have an unbelievable team, and an unbelievable coach."

Liverpool complete a 1-0 win over Arsenal. It was a stunning goal by Szoboszlai to win the game for Liverpool. They notch up a third straight victory in the Premier League.

But Dominik Szoboszlai didn't have his hands out to hit the ball in a crowded box. And VAR agree with the referee's call. Gyokeres is then felled as Endo is booked.

Manages to show a great first touch and turn of pace, but just can't get the ball out from under his feet and Liverpool can clear the danger.

Plenty of bodies being plunged into that Liverpool box all of a sudden. Jones doing well to thwart the danger with the home side hitting on the break.

Looks like Arsenal might be running out of road this afternoon. No sign of an Arsenal medic with Timber limping around. Liverpool so close to the three points now.

LIVERPOOL MUCH MORE LIVELY IN SECOND HALF

The champions with plenty of energy and wit in the final third without the finishing touches to perhaps win the game. Almost like a role reversal of the first half when Arsenal had the better spells of play.

Excellent play by Liverpool in final third as Wirtz feeds Salah, but the shot is cut out by Rice before another shot by Wirtz seconds later is charged down by Arsenal after Timber conceded a corner.

Merino and Martinelli depart the scene for the Gunners with £60m new boy Eze and captain Odegaard introduced for the closing moments.
