Brentford 2-2 Chelsea result - Fabio Carvalho nets stoppage-time equaliser to deny Blues the chance to go top of Premier League

It was a match that swung back and forth several times. Brentford capitalised on Chelsea's poor first half to take the lead through Kevin Schade on the counterattack.

However, Enzo Maresca made changes at the break and Cole Palmer came on off the bench to equalise before Moises Caicedo's rocket with five minutes remaining looked to seal all three points.

But it was Fabio Carvalho who had the last laugh, coming off the bench to tap the ball home after a long throw-in caused chaos inside the Chelsea box.

Delight for Brentford, disappointment for Chelsea at the end of a day packed full of Premier League action.

Jordan Henderson, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "It would have been harsh to lose the game. We made the game difficult, we created some decent chances and we deserved a point.

"It is nice to be back playing at the highest level. It is the best league in the world and I'm just grateful for the opportunity to show I can still play at the highest level.

"I still feel fit, I still feel good and I just want to keep trying to enjoy my football."

They were threatening it all match and finally succeeded with the long throw-in plan when it mattered the most.

It IS a unique part of Brentford's style of play but it can be so effective. This is their seventh goal from a throw in since the start of last season.

The game is so back.

Brentford's match-saver Fabio Carvalho, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "It just shows our resilience. It wasn't a win but we know how important it is to get these points.

"We stuck well and defended really well. Brentford's big on set-pieces so it was good to put it into practice.

"The team is really on board with [Keith Andrews's] plans and we have got more than enough quality to do well this season."

There were eight matches today as the Premier League returned this weekend after the first international break. Here are the results:

It has been such a topsy-turvy career for young Fabio Carvalho. After showing flashes of potential at Liverpool, he has struggled to settle in west London.

This equaliser will be a huge confidence boost for Carvalho who has a huge smile plastered on his face as he thanks the fans.

Wow, what a finish. The first half hour of this match was very sleepy but it came alive towards the end.

Chelsea miss out on the chance to go top and Enzo Maresca will be worried about the lack of creativity in attack in the first half. They stay fifth.

Meanwhile, that point launches Brentford up to 12th in the very early Premier League table. It was a deserved point with Jordan Henderson arguably player of the match with his midfield performance.

One last chance for Chelsea? Palmer plays a one-two with Garnacho but lifts the ball over the bar.

And there is the full-time whistle. Caicedo thought he had secured Chelsea the win with five minutes remaining but Fabio Carvalho was there in stoppage time to nick a deserved point.

What an impact! He's only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes but Fabio Carvalho might have bagged Brentford a point!

The long throw is launched in once more and Nathan Collins flicks the ball on to the far post.

Carvalho is able to pull away from Garnacho to tap home and, after a quick VAR check the goal stands!

Brentford have SIX minutes to find an equaliser. If not, they will remain 17th.

Tempers flare once more and Tyrique George picks up a booking for his troubles.

You have to feel for Brentford, who look set to fall victim to another late winner.

They're not quite out of this yet though, as Sanchez is forced to paw away a couple of crosses and long throw-ins.

Now Sanchez is down with a problem. Legitimate or gamesmanship?

Fabio Carvalho comes on for Lewis-Potter as Andrews rolls the dice one last time.

Garnacho's cross is half cleared and Caicedo picks the ball up on the D.

After one touch to steady himself, the Colombian blasts the ball into the top corner! Chelsea are heading to the top of the Premier League!

Ten minutes to go, plus added time. Pinnock is booked for delaying a restart as Brentford begin to fade having looked so good in the first hour.

Two more changes for the Bees. Aaron Hickey and Kristoffer Ajer replace Pinnock and Kayode. I guess that yellow card didn't really matter.

Neto continues to create chances but cannot find a blue shirt with his cross. Him and Palmer have dragged Chelsea back into this match.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho comes on for his Chelsea debut, with Joao Pedro making way. Other than the assist, it was a very quiet performance from Pedro.

BIG chance for Chelsea! Neto drives forward on the vacant right wing and plays a clever pass with the outside of his boot to Palmer inside the area.

Palmer shoots first time but Kelleher dives to his right to keep the scores level!

This match is becoming very end-to-end now. Pinnock produces a sliding block to deny Neto a shot on goal as we enter the last 20 minutes.

Kayode has another chance to send a long throw in but the fun's over before it started after some argybargy in the box. He gets a chance to retake it but Chelsea deal with it.

Keith Andrews makes his first change of the night, bringing on Rico Henry and Dango Ouattara for Thiago and Jensen.

That was only Palmer's second goal in 18 Premier League games but it is a very important one.

Chelsea have their tails up but Brentford are still threatening as Thiago runs forward but cannot quite get on the ball.

Thiago looks to be holding his hamstring after that run too, one to keep an eye on.

It had to be him!

Fernandez launches a cross towards Joao Pedro, who manages to head the ball down into space.

Cole Palmer is waiting right on the penalty spot and curls the ball into the bottom corner.
