Ruben Amorim revealed the details of a message he received from former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho ahead of his first match in charge of The Red Devils. Amorim will lead the side when they take on Ipswich Town this weekend. He said that Mourinho was full of praise for his former club. Amorim also insisted he is the man to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim revealed that Jose Mourinho reached out to him ahead of his first game as Manchester United manager, against Ipswich Town this weekend.

Amorim will take charge of The Red Devils for the first time on Sunday after succeeding former boss Erik ten Hag, who was sacked last month after the club's worst ever start to a Premier League season.

Mourinho, who knows Old Trafford well, having managed United between the summer of 2016 and December 2018, is now the head coach of Turkish club Fenerbahce.

And Amorim said that his fellow Portuguese coach reached out with a message, praising the "lovely club", as the former Sporting CP boss looks to establish himself as a long-term option in the Old Trafford dugout.

"He sent me a message, 'it’s a big club, lovely club with lovely people', and he’s correct, it still is," Amorim said.

"We are building a new club. I am a different guy. I hope to teach something different here to my players. It’s the best club in England. We want to win, that’s all."

United are 13th in the Premier League table after a poor start to the season which yielded just two league victories before Ten Hag's dismissal.

Amorim became United's sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and the former Sporting coach believes he is the right man to take the club back to the top of English football.

"Of course not, I truly believe that," he answered on whether United is an 'impossible' job now.

"Call me naive, I truly believe I’m the right guy for the right moment. I’m not worried about that. I really don’t know the biggest challenge, I will find out.

"You have different types of coaches here, the guys that won everything, like [Louis] van Gaal and Mourinho; the ones who knew the club, like [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer; and then one of the best outside the five biggest leagues in Ten Hag.

"We have to acknowledge we need time, but we also have to win games, and that is it. You have different types of coaches, same result. We will try to do it in our way."
