Manchester United 0 West Ham 2 result - Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen on target as Ruben Amorim's side slip to 16th in Premier League

The familiar pattern of success on a Thursday and failure on a Sunday continued for Manchester United as West Ham ran out 2-0 winners at Old Trafford, the record-equalling ninth home reverse for The Red Devils this season.

United looked lacklustre from the start and contributed to their own downfall for both goals with Hammers players being allowed space in their penalty area.

The opener came after 26 minutes when Mohammed Kudus drilled a ball from the left side of the six-yard box, finding Tomas Soucek who diverted it home from close range. The clincher three minutes before the hour mark emanated from the same position on the field as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, this time, coolly pulled the ball to the back post where Jarrod Bowen slotted home.

Rasmus Hojlund had at least three clear chances but could not add to the four league goals he has managed this term, in part due to good stops from Alphonse Areola - in particularly a miraculous flying block from two yards out.

West Ham rise above their opponents, and Tottenham, to 15th, while United lie a place behind, still a point away from the 40-point mark, which in many seasons is a benchmark for being safe from relegation.

The pattern of the season continues for Manchester United. West Ham leapfrog them and Spurs to reach the heady heights of 15th, United slip a place to 16th.

An awful touch from Lindelof lets the former Southampton man run into the penalty area but Bayindir spreads himself and saves the shot with his outstretched right leg.

A decent looking left-wing centre from Amass but with no home forwards in the vicinity the full back chests the ball back to his keeper.

Eriksen receives a short corner and pings a ball to the six-yard box but the United striker doesn't manoeuvre his body to meet it properly and heads wide.

But the full back, who has played very well on his return to Old Trafford, panicked a little and couldn't find a team mate.

Amass shot from the edge of the area and it diverted off the back of a Hammer into the path of Mainoo who could not divert an instinctive poke on target.

Coufal and Todibo come off for Emerson and Mavropanos.

The ball dropped to Hojlund three yards from goal after Maguire headed down Fernandes' cross but Areola pulls off a fantastic save lunging full length in front of him and then Lindelof cannot divert home the rebound.

As often is the case late in games, he is the main (if not only) danger for United. Once more he meets Fernandes' corner but this time it is straight at Areola.

From the ensuing corner, Maguire comfortably beats Ward-Prowse to the cross but heads just wide of the target with the goalkeeper beaten.

He is slipped through on goal by Diallo but cannot beat Areola who came off his line to block the shot.

It's fair to say Potter is thinking about holding the lead now as he takes off his two danger men Kudus and Bowen for Soler and Fullkrug.

But a good lunging block from Soucek stops the shot getting through to the target.

He meets the ball at the front post but cannot divert it on target, nor is a team mate in position to turn home.
