Crystal Palace 1-2 Everton: Premier League result as Carlos Alcaraz nets late winner at Selhurst Park

Carlos Alcaraz marked his first start for Everton with a late winner as The Blues continued their revival under David Moyes with a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace.

The Toffees rode their luck early on with Jordan Pickford saving well from Jean-Philippe Mateta before Ismaila Sarr rattled the crossbar from close-in.

It was a costly miss as the visitors stole in front three minutes before half time when a defensive lapse allowed Alcaraz to feed Beto to fire in his fourth goal in three league matches.

Palace immediately replied following the restart as Mateta knocked in Marc Guehi’s clever flick to become The Eagles’ joint-second highest scorer in Premier League history.

Everton kept battling and showed that renewed resilience under Moyes as they nicked all three points 10 minutes from time when Alcaraz fired home a rebound.

The result sees the Merseysiders rise to 13th place, level on 30 points with Crystal Palace but just below the Londoners courtesy of a slightly inferior goal difference.

The Eagles remain 12th with both sides 13 points clear of the drop zone.

Next up, Everton, who have won four of their six league matches since Moyes returned as manager, host Manchester United. Crystal Palace visit Fulham.

JAMES TARKOWSKI: "We knew it was going to be tough today," he told Sky Sports. "After what happened on Wednesday there was a lot of energy used - and losing bodies - but I’m just as proud of the lads today as in midweek (against Liverpool), because it was a tough, tough day.

"This lad (nods to Beto) was excellent, as was everyone else."

On Beto' performance and overall hot streak of late, he added: "He’s been outstanding; ran himself into ground, in midweek and today. He got his goal again, he’s showing his quality but also working hard for the team, holding the ball up, running channels. He was outstanding today and has been recently."

On the Moyes effect: "Since the manager has come in we have definitely improved. We are working every day to get better. We didn’t play great today but we were resilient.

"We are still working to get better and scoring and winning helps with that."

Beto on his new lease of life under Moyes: "I’m playing with more confidence, with joy. We are playing better football, you can see the team has confidence and we want to win every game. Today we showed we deserved to win."

He added: It means alot (hearing fans sing his name). I just need to keep working on myself and improving. Maybe I wasn’t playing because I wasn’t in a good fitness and not confident in my game. Now I have got confidence and I am happy to hear fans sing my name – it’s amazing."

On Carlos Alcaraz who provided an assist and scored the winner: "Amazing. He played really good today. We talked about it. I’m really happy for him. He’s a good guy."

In-form Beto continued to be the exemplar of Everton’s transformation under David Moyes as The Toffees claimed another hard-fought win to move them well clear of the relegation place.

Palace will feel they contributed enough to get something from the game, but Everton made it a week to remember as they followed up their last-gasp heroics in the Mersyside derby with more late joy thanks to new boy Alcaraz, who chipped in with a goal and assist on his first start since arriving on loan from Flamengo in January.

Everton have now won back-to-back away league matches for the first since December 2023 and pick up a first victory away to London clubs in eight attempts.

Wharton is dispossessed on the edge of his own area, but Beto lets the Palace man off the hook with a miscued shot from a tough angle near the left byline.

Alcaraz was charging into the middle for a cutback and a tap-in.

Pickford recovers from some poor positional play to tip Chilwell's low strike from the inside-left channel past the far post.

The Eagles keep a bit of pressure on from the resulting corner, but eventually Everton see the danger out and win a goal kick.

Mateta bends his run nicely chasing a long ball over the top. He out-muscles Tarkowski to get ahead in the race, but the bounce sees the ball skip rapidly off the turf and through to Pickford.

Munoz takes an excellent first touch on the burst to seize upon Eze's pass from the left, but he scuffs his attempt with his second and can't trouble Pickford from just outside the area.
