Brighton 2-1 Bournemouth - Danny Welbeck nets winner as Seagulls clinch third straight Premier League win

Second-half substitute Danny Welbeck scored the winner 15 minutes from time to take Brighton level with Bournemouth in the Premier League table, with a 2-1 win that serves as a boost to their European ambitions.

Both sides started on the front foot, with the match played at a frenetic tempo from the first whistle.

Brighton took the lead after just 12 minutes when Joao Pedro converted his penalty after he had been felled by on-loan Bournemouth keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Cherries pushed on in search of an equaliser and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was called into action when he made a big save to deny Antoine Semenyo, who looked certain to score.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side went close to doubling their lead just a few minutes later when Kaoru Mitoma’s volley struck the post.

Bournemouth continued to push for an equaliser in the second half and, after 62 minutes, Justin Kluivert came up with a sensational equaliser, cutting in from the left-hand side before bending a tremendous effort past Verbruggen.

Hurzeler turned to his bench not long after, opting to make a triple change, and it was a decision that paid off, with substitute Welbeck latching onto Georginio Rutter’s through ball before sliding his effort past Kepa to give the Seagulls all three points at the Amex.

Tonight's 2-1 victory could prove to be a massive one for Brighton, who move to 43 points, level with Bournemouth, one point behind Newcastle and Manchester City in sixth and fifth respectively and just three points off the top four.

It's now four consecutive victories across all competitions for Fabian Hurzeler's side, who have beaten Chelsea twice, Southampton and now Bournemouth during this run.

Brighton will be desperate to be back in European competition after getting a taste of it in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League season and with the way they're playing, there's every chance they could have their passports out next season.

Substitute Danny Welbeck's goal is the difference on the South Coast as Fabian Hürzeler's side collect all three points.

The ball is fizzed in from the left-hand side, Verbruggen pushes it out and the ball runs through Evanilson's legs before he can have a chance to swing a leg at it.

That didn't take him long! Just on as a substitute, 34-year-old Danny Welbeck has fired Brighton into the lead. Rutter slides the ball into the path of Welbeck who side foots it past Kepa, it hits the inside of the post and rolls into the back of the net. A terrific finish.

It's really difficult to tell which way this game is going to swing, Brighton will be hoping their substitutions energise them and give them some more attacking vigor, whereas Bournemouth have been the better side overall in the second half.
