SEMENYO SHINES AGAIN AS MANCHESTER CITY BEAT NEWCASTLE IN HARD-FOUGHT SEMI-FINAL
Manchester City new boy Antoine Semenyo made it two goals in two games as Pep Guardiola’s men won 2-0 at holders Newcastle United to take a firm grip of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.
The City-zens dominated from the off but it was The Magpies who missed the biggest chance of the first half when Yoane Wissa blazed over from Jacob Murphy’s pinpoint pass from the right.
The Magpies striker then saw a looping header brilliantly kept out by James Trafford following the restart before Bruno Guimaraes hit the post.
It looked like the momentum had shifted but City sprung forward and broke the deadlock on 53 minutes when Semenyo touched home Bernardo Silva’s flick from Jeremy Doku’s cross.
The former Bournemouth star thought he had doubled the advantage just past the hour, but a very lengthy VAR check eventually resulted in it being ruled out for an offside involving Erling Haaland.
Newcastle pushed for a late equaliser but were undone again deep into stoppage time when substitute Rayan Cherki polished off a slick move to leave Eddie Howe’s holders with it all to do heading into the second leg at Eithad Stadium on Wednesday, February 4.

MICAH RICHARDS REACTS TO MAN CITY’S FIRST-LEG TRIUMPH
"I thought Man City in that second half were absolutely brilliant," the former City defender said on Sky Sports.
He added: Obviously there was that contentious decision. In my opinion, it should have stood for Semenyo’s second goal.
"On the night, I thought Man City - especially in the second half - deserved to win the game."
Injured Newcastle defender Dan Burn also offered his verdict to Sky Sports: "That second goal was a killer. It sounds cliché, but it’s only half time. We can go there, we know what we’ve got to do, and we’ll still believe we can go there and get a result."

CAN NEWCASTLE PUT TOGETHER A BIG FIVE MINUTES HERE?
The holders know it will be a tall order trying to overturn a deficit in the second leg at the Etihad.
Woltemade tries to change that as he latches on to Barnes' ball from the left, but he can't engineer the space to let fly with a shot and desperate defending denies him.
