Manchester City 2-0 Brentford - Carabao Cup result as dazzling Rayan Cherki inspires City to reach the semi-finals

Manchester City are in the hat for the final four of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2020/21, thanks to Rayan Cherki's first-half stunner and Savinho's fortuitous 68th-minute strike.

Brentford, who will feel hard done by after abdukodir khusanov avoided a sending-off for a last-man challenge on Kevin Schade just 19 minutes in, were competitive for large stretches. But the Bees ultimately lacked any real cutting edge in the final third.

Cherki deserved his goal as he was a livewire for the hosts throughout. It was a beauty as the France international composed himself nicely to elude Mikkel Damsgaard's challenge before unleashing a rocket into the top right-hand corner.

Savinho's goal, which came against the run of play midway through the second period, wasn't as glamorous. The Brazilian winger did well to skip away from two Brentford challenges but was fortunate to see his driven strike take a wicked deflection off Kristoffer Ajer and over goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson.

Pep Guardiola, who benched Erling Haaland ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with West Ham United, brought on 19-year-old midfielder Charlie Gray for a first-team debut late on to round off a positive evening.

City, now on a six-match winning streak, will be eager to carry on the momentum as they host West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

Brentford had a great spell earlier in the half but Savinho's goal has knocked the wind out of their sails.

The Brazilian winger dribbles from deep, jinks out left and drills an effort towards goal. Ajer, sliding in to try and block, sees the ball take a wicked deflection off his leg and over Valdimarsson.

Just as Brentford looked like getting back into the tie, it's now a long way back for the visitors.

Foden controls Cherki's pass on his chest and fires a vicious half-volley.

It looked destined for the far bottom corner but Valdimarsson did excellently to dive low to his left.

Brentford's biggest threat is undoubtedly Schade, and he has been all night.

The speedy German keeps picking up the ball in between the lines and isn't afraid to take on his man.

Although he has been caught offside a few times, Schade looks the most likely to score if the visitors are to get back into this.

There haven't been many chances for the away side just yet, but they still look competitive, it has to be said.

Brentford are on City like a rash each time they lose possession and they have had prolonged spells with the ball themselves.

Having fouled Schade clean through in the first half, Khusanov does much better this time around with an improved piece of defending, getting himself in front of the Brentford forward to usher the ball back to Trafford.

Trafford parries out for a throw-in to deny Ajer, who struck with power from distance.

Kayode's throw isn't launched quite as far as usual and City clear the danger.
