Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea recap: Kai Havertz scores last-gasp winner as Arsenal book spot in Carabao Cup final at jubilant Emirates

Kai Havertz came back to haunt old club Chelsea as he came off the bench to fire Arsenal into the Carabao Cup final with a 1-0 second-leg victory at a saturated Emirates.

Having won 3-2 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg three weeks ago, Mikel Arteta's side did not need to score. But they earned the victory on the night via Havertz's last-gasp winner for a 4-2 aggregate success.

With the visitors pushing for an equaliser in the final few seconds of added time, Havertz bounded onto Declan Rice's pass on the counter before rounding Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to complete a merited win.

It was Arsenal's first semi-final win since 2020, when they defeated Manchester City 2-0 before edging Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

They will face City or holders Newcastle in the final on March 22 at Wembley chasing a first League Cup triumph since 1993.

City host Newcastle on Wednesday night at the Etihad holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg.

"Credit to Chelsea to be fair. Since their new manager has come in they've been really, really good," said the England midfielder on ITV.

"They changed the formation tonight and gave us problems. On another night they could have scored, but credit where it is due, our defence was incredible.

"We have a group who really want it. Whatever team comes at us, we're ready for it. When you play a team like Chelsea they throw so many things at you physically and mentally.

"You've got to have that resilience to stay strong and keep going.

"We deserve it. The last three or four years we've been at the top of the Premier League competing and got really close, but haven't been good enough.

"That's why this season we have that extra desire and fire in our bellies to go one step further in every competition. There's a long way to go but to be a cup final with this club is amazing."

Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze told Sky Sports: "It's so important.

"We've been working so hard and this is what we deserve. It's exciting times. When we've got a stadium like this, it's very hard to play against us. This team is so good, so strong and confident.

"We'll keep pushing. It was different to what we expected, but we adapted well and we fought well.

"We did what we needed to do."

Arsenal win 1-0 on the night to progress 4-2 on aggregate over the two legs. Chelsea put up a good show, but just didn't have the invention to overcome the Gunners. Arsenal will head for Wembley next month to face Man City or Newcastle in the final.

Chelsea caught up the other end of the pitch and Kai Havertz races onto the Rice pass to round Sanchez to slide home the winner. And that is job done for the Gunners.
