Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool result: Mario Lemina secures advantage for the hosts in the first leg of this UEFA Champions League last 16 tie in Istanbul

Mario Lemina scored the winner as Galatasaray beat Liverpool 1-0 to claim a slender advantage in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie.

The hosts made the breakthrough on seven minutes when Victor Osimhen’s header from a left-wing corner was nodded home by the former Wolves midfielder.

Liverpool had their moments in a lively, end-to-end first-half but Florian Wirtz wasted their two best openings.

The visitors had chances to level through Alexis Mac Allister and Hugo Ekitike following the restart but were left breathing a sigh of relief when Osimhen’s tap-in was ruled out for offside.

Arne Slot, who was overseeing his 100th match in charge of The Reds, was then left frustrated when a fortunate Liverpool equaliser that came from a number of ricochets from a left-wing corner, was also chalked off by VAR for a handball by Ibrahima Konate.

Next up, Liverpool are at home to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday prior to hosting Galatasaray in the second leg at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Atletico Madrid v Tottenham Hotspur takes place from 20:00 GMT at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.
