Nick Kyrgios identifies 'incredible athlete' who could challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner after Wimbledon final

Jannik Sinner ousted Carlos Alcaraz in another mesmerising Grand Slam final on Sunday to take the Wimbledon trophy. It was the second dazzling final showdown in a row between the pair, who have now shared the last seven major titles in a row. Afterwards, Nick Kyrgios, Dan Evans and CoCo Vandeweghe considered who might be able to break the duopoly and challenge the dominant pair for major titles.

As the dust settled on another blockbuster Grand Slam final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, the TNT Sports team considered who – if anyone – could break their stranglehold on major titles.

Sinner saw off his great rival in four sets to claim his first SW19 crown and become the first Italian, male or female, to win the singles title at the All England Club.

For the 23-year-old, there was also the satisfaction of avenging his five-set defeat to Alcaraz last month in a French Open final that became an instant classic.

The two youngsters are hoovering up major trophies at a rapid rate, having shared the last seven in a row since the start of the 2024 season.

Given their dominance at the pinnacle of the sport, CoCo Vandeweghe, Nick Kyrgios and Dan Evans were asked to consider who might be able to break the duopoly.

"At this point I feel like it’s a name we haven’t heard of," said Vandeweghe on the Wimbledon Watchalong on TNT Sports and discovery+.

"I just don’t see anyone in the top five that can do it. Maybe an outsider, Taylor Fritz. That’s the only guy who has pushed them.

"[Ben] Shelton got crushed out there [by Sinner in straight sets in the quarter-finals], somebody we thought would have a chance.

"You’re not that young when you are 21, it’s not that young any more because these guys are winning Grand Slams at that age.

"I understand you might have an outside chance, but we’re talking about the person who is going to be the Novak Djokovic who crashes the party, or Andy Murray.

"We’re not talking about the one-off that might take a title – that’s a different conversation."

British No. 1 Jack Draper has emerged as a contender over the last year, rising to No. 4 in the world rankings.

Aged 23, he is from the same generation as Alcaraz and Sinner but is yet to enjoy similar levels of success.

However, Draper’s landmark Indian Wells triumph in March was the first Masters 1000 title of his career and Kyrgios is confident he can compete for Slam honours too.

"Draper, I watched him, I think he’s more than capable of being that person," said Kyrgios.

"He’s an incredible athlete, a big lefty, maybe not as comfortable – as he said – on the grass.

"I think he could more than answer the question to be that person.

"Guys like Joao Fonseca, he’s a bit young at the moment, he’s a kid, he’s got so much growing to do and he’s got a long career ahead.

"Fritz was right there in the semi-final. A couple of points here and there, if he plays it better.

"I think Holger Rune was that guy, and now he’s kind of fallen behind. I would have expected more from him."

Evans was less confident of a challenger emerging from the current crop of ATP players, having witnessed remarkable maturity from Alcaraz and Sinner, 22 and 23 respectively, despite their youth.

"How these two deal with everything in life, on and off the court, they just get it done," Evans said.

"When there is an error, you hardly see a reaction. They are worlds apart from the chasing pack in that sense."
