Serena Williams: Patrick Mouratoglou says tennis legend is ‘capable of doing the impossible’ amid rumoured comeback

Patrick Mouratoglouhopes Serena Williams will shoot for the stars and ”attempt the impossible” when she makes her expected return to tennis.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is reportedly set to make a much-anticipated return by playing doubles at Queen’s next month.
Williams, 44, hasn’t played competitively since stepping away from tennis following the 2022 US Open.
But she has been free to return since February, having completed six months in the drug testing pool, which is a requirement for players before reinstatement.
It is not known how many tournaments Williams will play or what her ambitions will be, but former coach Mouratoglou expects her to be aiming high.
”Serena has shown me so many times that she’s capable of doing things that are theoretically impossible,” he told TNT Sports.
”I believe she’s capable of anything - that’s the first thing.

”As for being level-headed, I don’t think so, and I hope not. That’s one of her greatest qualities.
”If she’d been realistic, she would never have done the exceptional things she’s done because she would have told herself it wasn’t possible.
”When she told me, for example, while she was seven months pregnant, ‘Starting in September, find me a new sparring partner,’ and I replied, ‘Serena, you’re due in September.’

”‘So what?’ she said, and I told her, ‘You haven’t trained much since you just gave birth.’ And she replied, ‘Don’t underestimate me.’ Is that rational? No, it’s not rational. Is it good to think that way? But of course, that’s why she’s Serena.
”So I hope she won’t be rational, and I hope she’ll attempt the impossible, because if there’s one person capable of doing the impossible, it’s her.”
Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open when she was pregnant with her first child.
She has hinted at a return in the last few months, with suggestions that she could play doubles with sister Venus, who is still competing on tour.
Mouratoglou believes Williams would only come back if she feels she can ”beat the best”.

”I think she wants to test herself in doubles first; that’s probably why she requested a wildcard in doubles, and if she’s satisfied with her level, maybe she’ll request a wildcard in singles at Wimbledon.
”That doesn’t seem like a likely scenario to me, but Serena isn’t the kind of person who would come back if she didn’t feel capable of playing and beating the best.
”If it means playing a supporting role, that’s just not her style. I think this doubles match is also a way for her to see if she feels capable of beating the best.
”Doubles isn’t the same as singles, of course, but it’s already a first taste of competition.”
Williams has won Wimbledon seven times, with her last victory coming in 2016.
In her last appearance at the Grand Slam in 2022, she was beaten in the first round by Harmony Tan.
Mboko 'excited' by potential Williams partnership
It has been reported that Williams will play doubles with Victoria Mboko at Queen’s.
The 19-year-old has soared up the rankings over the last year and reached the third round of the French Open with a battling win over Katerina Siniakova.
Afterwards, Mboko was questioned plenty about her potential partnership with Williams, but didn’t confirm anything.
”I think for me I want to kind of let the moment for her,” she said.

”I feel like if she's ready to come back on her own terms, then I feel like it's up to her to announce that, but other than that, I don't really have much to say. I think the moment is all up to her, and when she's ready to come back, it's up to her.”
Mboko did, though, say it was ”pretty cool” to be in contact with Williams, who was her ”idol” growing up.
”I'm very happy. You know, me and Serena have stayed in touch, which is really, really nice, because I really look up to her.
”I mean, the fact that she even knows me is very, it's very exciting”
