Flavio Cobolli and Zach Svadja had barely begun their fourth-round match at the French Open when drama struck out on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

With the American serving at 1-1 in the opening set at Roland-Garros, Svajda opted for a drop shot to lure his opponent into the net.

But Cobolli was wise to the move, and ran it down quickly, playing a deft cross-court shot that got Svajda on the run.

The 23-year-old nearly got there, but was carrying so much speed not only could he not pull off a good enough shot, and thus lost the point, but he ran straight into the umpire’s chair to boot, ricocheting off the court furniture and into the dirt.

Nick Mullins was calling the match, and couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing.

He said: ”Oh, he’s hurt himself. Oh my goodness.

"Well, I mean, the work to get to the ball, and then he clattered through all the furniture and the chairs around Aurelie Tourte, and the umpire’s chair."

Miles Maclagan noted that it might have sounded "more dramatic" than it was, but Svajda was felled behind the chair, leading to Tourte - who was calling the match - coming down to check on the welfare of the player.

She was not the only one, with Cobolli also coming across to see if his opponent was okay. The Italian went one step further, using his drinking water to wash the dirt off Svajda’s elbow as the two put their rivalry aside for a moment.

"Ah well, that is nice to see," added Mullins.

"Cobolli was the first across to check on the welfare of Zach Svajda. Let’s take a look at this."

While much of the focus of the replay was on the end result, Maclagan was quick to note that it was "a beautiful touch" from Cobolli at the net that led to Svadja’s accident in the first place.

"It was dangerous, but he’s brushed himself off," Maclagan concluded.

While Svajda was fit to continue, he wound up losing the game and the first set 2-6, with Cobolli going on to win the first two sets before the American fought back to take the third in a tie-break.

The winner will face either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Alejandro Tabilo in the quarter-finals.
