Novak Djokovic is hoping to have the chance to defend his Olympic crown at the Los Angeles Games in 2028, despite the fact that he will be 41-years-old. The Serbian ended his long wait for Olympic glory in Paris in 2024 as he completed the career 'Golden Slam'. Following his second-round match at Indian Wells, the veteran said competing at the games in two years is one of his "long-term goals".

Novak Djokovic has said competing at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 is one of his "long-term goals".

The Serbian won a long-awaited Olympic gold at the Paris Games in 2024, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final to complete the career ‘Golden Slam’.

Despite the fact that he will be 41 years old in the summer of 2028, Djokovic is hoping he will have the chance to defend his crown.

"That's one of the long-term goals, to reach ⁠the Olympics. That would be nice," he said following his second-round win over Kamil Majchrzak at Indian Wells on Saturday.

"It's still a long way off. I think at my age and this stage of my career, every year seems like a longer period than it is for anyone who is younger.

"But I'll try to make it, definitely one of the motivations, so I'll try to be there."

Djokovic’s gold in Paris was his second medal at the Olympics, having only previously claimed bronze in Beijing in 2008.

The Serbian was beaten in the bronze-medal match in 2012 by Juan Martin del Potro, and in 2020, this time by Pablo Carreno Busta.

Meanwhile, he fell at the first hurdle in 2016, losing out once again to Argentinian Del Potro.

Andy Murray is the only male player to successfully defend his Olympic title, winning gold in London in 2012 and again in Rio four years later.

Djokovic’s main goal, though, is undoubtedly to win a 25th Grand Slam tournament, which would take him clear of Margaret Court’s 24 major titles.

However, the record-breaking triumph continues to elude the world No. 3, who has reached just two major finals since his US Open title in 2023, losing to Alcaraz on both occasions.

The most recent of those defeats came in January, being denied the historic feat by the Spaniard at the Australian Open after an unlikely run to the final.

With the match at Indian Wells being his first since the defeat in Melbourne, Djokovic said: "It's good to be back on tour.

"Five weeks with no official match, I knew that the first match in such a long time will be a little bit tricky with ⁠conditions that are quite challenging," he said, referring to the winds in California.

The Serbian came from a set behind to beat Majchrzak 4-6 6-1 6-2 and advance into the third round, where he will face American Aleksandar Kovacevic.

He is targeting a sixth title at Indian Wells, though he admitted he has found it "very challenging" at the tournament in recent seasons.

"It has been hard for me to find my A-game," he said. "Particularly in the beginning of the tournament in the past seven or eight years. I am glad to overcome a challenge.

"I find that the wind here is one of the toughest on tour. With the gusts coming in and out, changing direction, it is so, so difficult. Particularly from one end of the court, and it puts extra tension."
