Mark Williams earlier eased past Joe O'Connor 5-1 to secure a meeting with Mark Selby, who came through 5-2 against David Gilbert. The action is live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Trump defeats Lisowski as Maguire stuns Zhao in thriller

Judd Trump compiled two centuries on his way to booking his spot in the last 16 of the Wuhan Open with a battling 5-3 win over Jack Lisowski on Tuesday.

The world No. 1 now leads his close friend 13-5 in career head-to-heads, dominating the final two frames after Lisowski had levelled at 3-3 from 3-1 behind, boosted by a 65 in the fifth frame.

Lisowski had opened with a sparkling break of 133, but could not score heavily enough from several chances that came his way as Trump produced 108 and 100 in continuing his quest for a second title in Wuhan.

Trump has now won eight straight matches against Lisowski, last losing to him in 2018.

He will face Gary Wilson for a quarter-final spot on Wednesday after the former Scottish and Welsh Open champion dumped out Masters champion Shaun Murphy 5-3.

Former UK champion Stephen Maguire showed his mettle to win a thriller against world champion Zhao Xintong 5-4 on the final black, edging an epic final frame by four points on the black after producing 119 to level at 4-4 with Zhao making 100 to lead 4-3.

Meanwhile, former world champions Mark Williams and Mark Selby will meet in the last 16 on Wednesday morning, 07:00 UK time, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Williams produced breaks of 59, 129 and 95 in a 5-1 win over Joe O'Connor with Selby defeating David Gilbert, who compiled 101 in the third frame, 5-2 in a match that saw both men struggle for optimum form.

Elsewhere, 18-year-old Stan Moody finally ended the 'Ding Junhui curse' with a 5-1 win over Zhou Yuelong.

Former world junior champion Moody became the first player in 23 matches to win a match after eliminating Ding from a tournament, a run stretching back to the 2024 Welsh Open with every professional suffering defeat in the round after defeating Ding.

"When I was 3-1 up I was sat in the player’s lounge and thought I could be the one to break it. I got over the line so I’m happy with that," Moody told reporters.

"I thought it would be good to do it and get a little record. It was definitely playing on my mind, so I had to just focus and get on with it."

The Wuhan Open continues on Tuesday with the third day of action.

World No. 1 Judd Trump heads into his match against Jack Lisowski on the back of a dazzling display against Liu Hongyu.

The world No. 1 is in action in the second session at 12:30pm UK time, while Mark Williams faces Joe O'Connor in the morning.

Reanne Evans and Zhao Xintong are also in action in the second session, against Tom Ford and Stephen Maguire respectively.

Meanwhile, John Higgins faces Yuan Sijun in the evening session in Wuhan with Shaun Murphy taking on Gary Wilson on a bumper day dripping with genuine quality.
