The big guns took to the tables in Jeddah on Tuesday evening, with the world's top 16 kicking off their challenge for glory at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. Defending champion Judd Trump exited in dramatic circumstances with defeat to Oliver Lines. In the evening, Ronnie O'Sullivan made light work of an in-form Joe O'Connor to progress through to the last 16.

An excellent performance from Ronnie O'Sullivan, his new cue looking in perfect working order, saw him destroy an in-form Joe O'Connor 5-0 and move into the the last 16 of the Saudi Arabia Masters, where he will meet either Chang Bingyu or Mark Allen.
The Rocket began well, but a miss let O'Connor in with the steal on, and, just as that looked inevitable, a black missed off its spot allowed O'Sullivan in to clear. From there, the match was no sort of contest.
O'Connor simply could not get himself going, missing eight of nine long pots, and it was no surprise to see him whitewashed in 65 minutes.

Easy for, or made to look easy by, the greatest of all time. Next for him, Mark Allen or Chang Bingyu; next for Joe, a sleepless night replaying a performance as poor as he is capable of producing.

Ronnie secures the match, his new cue working very nicely indeed.

Ronnie gets in again with a fine long red, adds a thin cut-back black, then takes a red from low on the right side to left corner, a beautiful pot, and that is surely the match. Joe was in great form too, prior to this, but the miss that cost him frame one stung, his opponent took heart, and he's not been able to get himself going again.

But he doesn't get to play it, not getting straight enough on the pink to get easily on to the next red and going around the angles instead, only to cannon the brown. Joe remains alive, just.

Looking to get on to his fifth red, Ronnie doesn't get high enough, so must content himself with the blue, but the match is almost his – one successful bump of the pack and this is over.

Ach, Joe misses yet another longun – he's now 1/9 – and Ronnie gets away to left corner, adds the black, and there are points there for him, the big dog passing unobstructed to both corners. For a second time in two frames, you immediately wonder if there's a maxi attempt incoming.

In roundabout an hour, Ronnie is a frame away from victory. Whwen they reutnr in 15 minutes, Joe will need five on the spin.

Even a kick can't stop Ronnie potting another red and though he's not on the pink as he'd like, he drains it anyway. For those unfamiliar with Joe's oeuvre, he's a really good player who was talking yesterday about how up for this contest he was; sadly, he's having his posterior presented to him.

But Ronnie instead moseys down the table for green, the maxi opportunity gone – but the chance to seize another frame still very much there for him.

Again, Joe goes hard at a starter, but this time partly because he can't see a decent safety. Problem is, he doesn't get close – he's 1/8 from distance - and he leaves all sorts, the big fish not out of the question.

Red along the top cushion followed by black for the frame ... and there it is. Joe is in big trouble and must win the next to have any chance.

Ronnie digs into the pack off the black, doesn't connect as he'd like, and is he on one? Just, one across the table to middle, but off the side rail ... and he can't force it down. But when Joe goes hard at a starter, long and diagonally, he misses by a way, careers into the bunch, and that will surely mean 3-0. Joe hasn't recovered well from the botched black which cost him frame one.

Joe gets away again, a really nice long pot taking him off two cushions and on to the black ... which he really nearly misses. But this time it drops ... only for him to send the next red into the knuckle of left corner. So Ronnie gets going, a few balls in the open, but there's work to do with the pack to make something significant.

Joe should've gone 1-0 up; now he's 2-0 down, and knows he can't really afford to lose this next frame. He's in first too, cleaning up to middle when Ronnie misses to corner, but he doesn't land on a colour when he should, disappointedly nuzzling up to the brown instead.

I nip to the conveniences, then return to see Joe miss a plant and Ronnie get away, reds all over. He quickly gets the black back into play, screwing back off the green, through a gap that lets him pot it, and from here, should score heavily.

A poor positional shot means a taxing yellow; Joe sends it down but can he clip the next red to left corner? Yes he can, but is he on a colour? Just about, but can he drop pink to middle and get on to the next ball? Absolutely! Down it goes, now for black to yellow, and this should be 1-0 to the underdog. BUT HE MISSES THE POT! Ronnie will surely punish!

Looking for thin contact ano red, Ronnie clips the pink that's just on top of it, and it takes quite some time to restore the balls to their original positions, after which a different shot goes even less well, offering Joe a chance to steal.

Eeesh, but Joe quickly miscues, addressing a black off its spot, the white leaping off the table, and that could make the crucial difference in this frame. But Ronnie's safety leaves a longun, he sends it down ... and goes in-off. There are 59 points left.

Oooh, but an unexpected miss to right corner allows Joe to enjoy the fruits of Ronnie's labours developing balls; this is the kind of chance you feel he must take.

Ronie's soon in again and a decent yellow keeps the run going, though the table isn't ideal. Earlier, Judd said conditions were heavy and he lost confidence, unable to get going, but it's also worth noting that the pockets are pretty receptive.

Joe's a really good confident player, so it's no surprise to see him take on a longun off the break. But it jumps out of the jaws, races up the table, and Ronnie quickly sends it to middle. A lovely red, diagonal to right corner, shows that he's striking it nicely, but following a less good effort, he rolls into the pack to play safe.

A fantastic performance from Oliver Lines saw him beat Judd Trump – the world No. 1, defending champion and his close friend – 5-3 in their Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters clash on Tuesday.
Trump took the first frame, but Lines played superbly thereafter, making two centuries in building a 4-1 lead.
Trump, though, is nothing if not a competitor, something that is often forgotten because his potting is so incendiary, fighting back to 4-3 with Lines spurning chances to clinch the match.
But though he allowed another opportunity to pass in frame eight, when he got in a second time, he rediscovered the composure he displayed in the first part of the match, securing victory – and a last-16 clash with Ali Carter or Gary Wilson - with a century.

The champ is out! He performed poorly today but Oli played very well indeed, thoroughly deserving his last-16 clash with Ali Carter or Gary Wilson - and he finishes with a century too!
Trump 3-4 Lines (0-69)
Those balls disappear, the lead 68 with 67 left, and if he can double the last loose red, he's done and done ... AND IT'S THERE! OLIVER LINES IS GOING TO BEAT JUDD TRUMP! But can he finish with a century?

A black cut to right corner keeps Oli going, he then knocks the green safe by mistake – he'll take that – and a black punched home means he's a red and a colour away from leaving the champ needing a snooker.
Trump 3-4 Lines (0-30)
This is the Oli of the first five frames, calmly slotting balls, and he's various loose ones to go at before needing to think about doing anything especially difficult. This really should be curtains but, as we know, this thing of ours has an agenda of its own.

OK! Oli picks out a cut to left corner, opts to have a go at it ... and slides it home. An inadvertent cannon of blue off brown makes the next ball harder, but he sticks it down with the rest ... only to refuse a nasty cut on the black from close to it; understandably so. Judd, though, misses to right corner by a way, Oli tidies, and here he goes again. Can he see this match away? This is, frankly, a delightful opportunity so to do.

Can he control his emotions?

Gosh, a poor shot apiece, Judd cueing right across his, means there's no further score then, left tight to the baulk rail, he twice misses a thin contact, is warned that if he repeats the trick he'll forfeit the frame – and with it the match – so he finds a rudimentary alternative, leaving a difficult one to middle. If Oli can drain it, he'll have another shot at finishing, though the reds are neither open nor bunched; he gets close but not close enough.

Off Judd's break, Oli lines – ooh yeah! – up a starter to left corner, white near the bottom cushion ... and steers it down very nicely indeed. A yellow follows, but a miserable blue, another sign of tension, means he's got a red across the table from too close to the side; he hits the jaw, another chance to end things let go. He doesn't leave anything, though, so we're back playing safety.

Oli will be concerned he missed the black in the way he did, but will also have noted Judd was not convincing in reducing the arrears. One good chance and the shock is more likely than not.

Oh my goodness! The best player in the world, one of the best players ever, misses another black off its spot! This game! So Oli gets away the, very carefully, drops in a much harder big dog ... only to botch his second, not even hitting the jaw. Pressure! So Judd returns to the table knowing his opponent is feeling it, and though there's a red not far off the side, I'd expect him to do enough at this visit.

Judd wins the exchange and slides nicely to left-middle, but a poor brown makes things difficult – he's not getting through the white, reckons Ken, though it's also worth saying once more that Oli has played beautifully. Meantime, though, he continues finding pots, and from here I'd expect him to close the gap.

Judd slots to left corner, adds the blue, and if he can spank pack off black, we'll see how it goes and is he on one? Er, just about, but he can't then make it to the next colour, the balls not going for him, and the next safety exchange is crucial: there are plenty of loose reds and if Oli pots next, he'll be set to secure the match.

Of course, the pressure amps up with just a frame needed for victory, especially against so brilliant player and doughty a competitor as Judd ... who knocks in a fine long red to get going. He's had chances in frames he's lost prior to now and not taken them but will be dialled in with the match on the line ... OR NOT! He jawses a black off its spot, Oli strokes one long to the yellow bag, and if he can ram home the black left on the lip, he'll career into the pack send surely release a few balls. Er, no. He misses the middle, lands on nowt, and plays safe, his first chance at finishing things gone.

The most impressive thing about that break is how little there is to say about it: no scares nor recovery-pots, just good, confident play. The champ needs four straight to avoid an ignominious first-hurdle exit.

Banking the ranking points he'd get from winning this would be massive for Oli's season, and he eases to the frame! Judd came back from 4-0 down in last season's first round, against a much better player, going on to win the trophy, but Wu Yize does sometimes struggle under pressure. There's no sign that's going to happen here.
Trump 1-3 Lines (1-30)
Oli's potted well today, but most impressive has been his composure. He's playing a mate who also happens to be the best cueist in the world, he's on the match table and there's a load of money at stake, but you'd never know. And, as I type, a green with the rest brings the white up the table; he's in great shape, his pot success 96%. If it stays there, he'll win this match.

I doubt Oli wanted the break – he was doing fine, thank you. But after Judd manages a red and no more, he spanks in a starter, quickly opens the pack, and this is another opportunity to score heavily! Are we on the cusp of a shock?

The champ is in a match here. Oli is playing nicely, calmly accepting opportunities, and if he secures the frame – he's very close - he'll go into the interval in great heart.

Oli tidies available balls but, looking to break the pack, only releases one, and must now attempt a yellow with the rest ... which he downs nicely. He's building a useful lead here.
Trump 1-2 Lines (0-9)
My computer crashes, returning to life to see Oli sinking his first colour, the yellow, which leaves him nicely on a second red. There aren't loads that are loose, but better to be at the table potting than in a chair, sitting.

Great work from Oli, who hits the front. I get the sense Judd doesn't believe he can lose this and he might be right, but he's going further in testing the theory i just made up than I expected him to.

But not for long! Judd quickly leaves it, and from here, Oli will surely complete the steal.

Oli goes at it off the yellow but doesn't get his cannon, so sends it to the bottom rail, the chase on.

Oli opens the cluster, and that green might just save Judd here; everything else is pottable.

A lovely recovery, red sent hurtling to middle, sustains the run, but on nowt, the green is knocked safe; again, Oli's safety isn't good enough, but this time, Judd's opener won't drop. Will he be punished?
Trump 1-1 Lines (27-16)
But again, he makes an error, overcutting to right corner; can Oli cue well enough to slide down a straight diagonal? Yes he can, but nudgiung along black cush, he soon leaves a red on the lip, and that is goig to cost him.

Oh, I wasn't expecting that: Judd runs out of position, refuses a hail Mary pot, and plays back towarrds the baulk rail. And this might be the difference in this match: not the potting but the safety. Another poor effort form Oli leaves a starter, so off goes the champ again.

Oli misses a very precise spot on a red that would've left everything safe, but only leaves one needing sent long to the green bag; Judd coaxes it home beautifully and gets to work, balls available for him.

Oli gives Judd's error – and perhaps over-confidence – the punishment it derseves. He misses a doubled black so there's no total clearance, but a composed Inter City, as I'm now calling a 125 break, levels us up.

Oli secures the frame – a gift from his practise partner, but nevertheless.

The relative ease of the clear-up brings with it its own pressure, but Oli is doing a good job of keeping things natural, slotting balls with precision. This is going to be 1-1.

Left a starter to left corner, Oli misses by miles, hitting the side cushion not even the jaw. So Judd looks to sink a cut-back which takes him into the pack ... and he misses the pot, leaving the world! If this isn't converted, we'll know the match is only going one way.

In the first round last term, Judd found himself 4-0 down to Wu Yize and still came back to win 5-4. This time, he takes an immediate lead, and Oli is not the player Wu is.

Judd clips a red into left corner, off the near jaw – these pockets are receptive – the result of him landing white on rail and Oli leaving it in open table. So he lays a snooker with his opponent needing one, sinks a starter following the escape, lays another, and when the miss comes, tidies the final red. That'll be the frame.
Trump 0-0 Lines (57-22)
Another recovery pot – with the rest as was the last - keeps the run going, but unable to get at the penultimate red, marooned on black cush, he plays to the baulk rail, Oli still in the frame.
Trump 0-0 Lines (31-22)
Judd, of course, is the champ, presenting Mark J Williams with an incredible final-frame dish to clinch the trophy. And he looks in decent nick here, just about potting a red off the far jaw to recover a loose positional shot. He's looking good for the lead.
Trump 0-0 Lines (19-22)
Oli builds and there are plenty of reds open, but for the now he's chasing position, and you can only do thatfor so long. He jawses one to corner with the rest, Judd sticks one away with the rest, and that could be an expensive error, all the more so as it promoted the black.
Trump 0-0 Lines (16-6)
Not for long: a good shot from Oli forces the error and allows a starter to right corner, but he can't get position so it's back to baulk.
