Scottish Open 2024: Wu Yize's mental strength praised by Jimmy White and Alan McManus - 'He has got that naturally'

Wu Yize powered into the final of the Scottish Open at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh with a 6-4 win over Xiao Guodong. The youngster showed his battling qualities as he was 4-2 behind, and Jimmy White and Alan McManus were impressed with how he got the job done on Saturday. Jimmy White and Alan McManus were impressed with Wu Yize's mental strength in his win over Xiao Guodong in the semi-finals of the Scottish Open.

Wu found himself 4-2 behind, but engaged a higher gear to win four frames on the spin to book his place in the second final of his career.

The Chinese player was not at his best, and White and McManus were impressed with how he was able to bounce back from his errors.

"The best players in any sport, as soon as the mistake is made, it is gone," White said in the Eurosport studio. "In snooker for example, people like Mark Selby, once they get to their chair it is forgotten, and he [Wu] has got that naturally."

Echoing White’s view, McManus said: "When your game goes out there it is a horrible feeling, and we have all been there, but I don’t think Wu even knows about that. 

"His game goes a bit up and a bit down. When it’s up, it’s up, and when it’s down, he recovers quickly."

White is impressed with how Wu can shift gears during matches.

"He can make breaks from nowhere, he can create chances, and there was some magic in there," White said. "He is gaining experience all the time. We know how good he is."

Issuing a warning to Mark Allen and Lei Peifan, who will contest the second semi-final, White said: "He can play so much better than that. He was hovering in second or third gear."

White could also take some credit for Wu’s win after helping the 21-year-old with a piece of equipment.

"He’s got my chalk," White said. "He has run out of chalk so I had to give him a bit."
