Injury frustrates Elise Christie as medal hunt ends in Dordrecht

There was disappointment for Team GB’s brightest PyeongChang 2018 medal prospect Elise Christie on Saturday as an injury prevented her from challenging for a medal at World Cup 2 in Dordrecht.

The world record holder at 500m and triple world champion still collected some useful Olympic qualifying points, though, as she reached the semi-final of the 1500m and the quarter-final of the 500m in the short track event in the Netherlands.

A minor thigh injury was cited as the reason for Christie’s failure to make more of an impression, but she will look to recapture her best form in World Cup 3 in Shanghai in November.

“I am obviously disappointed, as anyone would be in this situation, but when I get back I am confident I can make a full recovery before we go to Asia and perform at the top level again,” Christie said.

Christie took bronze in the 1000m in World Cup 1 in Budapest at the start of October.

Team-mate and close friend Charlotte Gilmartin is also hoping to make an impact at the Winter Olympics in February and competes in the quarter-finals of the 1000m in Dordrecht on Sunday in search of qualification points.
