Jorge Martin set for spell on sidelines with collapsed lung and 11 broken ribs after Qatar Grand Prix crash

MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin could be out for as long as three months after he suffered a nasty crash at the Qatar Grand Prix at the Lusail Circuit. Martin, returning to action for the first time in 2025 having recovered from three injuries in 65 days, suffered another setback as he fell off his bike on lap 14 of the race, and was then hit by Fabio di Giannantonio when down on the track.

MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin could be out for three months with injury.
Martin, the Aprilia rider, fell on lap 14 of the recent Qatar Grand Prix, where he was hit by Fabio di Giannantonio while he was down.
The Spaniard missed the first three Grands Prix of 2025 through injury, and he suffered another hugely unfortunate setback at the Lusail Circuit.
Doctors have ordered Martin to remain in the Middle East for another fortnight before he can return to his native Spain, and it appears that the world champion, who moved to Aprilia this year, could find himself sidelined for three months.
Medics found Martin to have a collapsed lung and 11 broken ribs as a result of the crash, with the trapped air between his lungs and chest wall set to be drained through a tube.

Martin has been hugely unlucky with his fitness, getting injured three times in just 65 days, on top of enduring two nasty crashes after he had recovered from the first two issues.
Martin revealed in the build-up to Qatar that World Championship leader Marc Marquez had advised him to ensure that he was fully recovered from injury before competing again, with Marquez having returned too early from a right-arm injury himself in 2020, when he had considered retiring from the sport after racing the first 26 laps in Jerez before falling.
Marquez, the Ducati rider and Martin’s compatriot, won in Qatar over the weekend, four and a half seconds ahead of his team-mate Francesco Bagnaia in second.
Franco Morbidelli, Bagnaia’s fellow Italian, completed an all-Ducati podium.
The next race of the MotoGP calendar is at Jerez - the Spanish GP - on April 27.
