Kane bagged a goal and an assist, and was heavily involved in the opening goal too, while conceding a penalty at the other end in an incident-packed match.

Between weathering an intense Mexico storm of attacks in the closing 20 minutes and the now-traditional rendition of Wonderwall with the fans after the match, Kane could barely speak during his interview.

A hoarse and gravelly-voiced Kane told BBC Sport: "It was a crazy game, we had to fight. I’ve just been singing there, can’t really talk.

”All the occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.

”Just look at them [the fans] here, incredible, unbelievable support. Speechless, I can’t even talk.”

Mexico set up a nervy ending thanks to Raul Jimenez's 69th-minute penalty, after Kane caught the boot of Brian Gutierrez, but England held on for a crucial win.

Kane was adamant that the decision was incorrect. He said: ”I thought I got to the ball first, it was one of those days that the ref gave a lot against us.

”In the end it didn’t matter so I’m happy.”

'In years gone by, England would have crumbled'

Jude Bellingham was once again the star of the show as his quickfire brace in the first half set England on the path to victory.

The Real Madrid midfielder now has four goals and one assist in the tournament and is getting a reputation for stepping up in high-pressure moments to deliver for The Three Lions.

He was equally pivotal in defence, making four clearances - three inside his own penalty area - including one at the end of the first half to prevent a near-certain Mexico leveller.

However, Bellingham was keen to emphasise it was a team effort against Mexico, in the gruelling and intimidating atmosphere at the Azteca.

He said: "It was probably an important clearance, as important as the goal, but this win is far bigger than me.

”It’s the players who came on, it’s the supporters who came to Mexico, paid hard-earned money. This is a whole country’s performance.

"Big pressure moments that maybe in years gone by and especially me watching as a fan as a little kid, England would probably have crumbled, but this team stuck together until the last second.

”The players who came on, the players who started, running themselves into the ground, putting their body on the line. That’s what this team’s all about.

”The atmosphere was by far the best I’ve played against in international football. This country as a footballing country is just magnificent.

”Although it was hostile, the reception was a beautiful thing to see as to how passionate a country can be about their team.

"At 2-1, the game was still there, especially when they scored it felt like the stadium almost collapsed.

”But if you can’t enjoy a night like this, just one night, then I don’t know what it’s worth."
