Harry Kane has written another chapter in English football history after becoming the nation's outright leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup. The striker rose to meet Jude Bellingham's cross to surpass Gary Lineker's record with his 11th strike across three tournaments.

The England captain reached the landmark during The Three Lions' 2-0 victory over Panama in their final group-stage match.

It doubled his side's advantage after Thomas Tuchel's men had toiled for over an hour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The goal took Kane to 11 World Cup strikes, moving him past a long-standing national record of 10 from Lineker, who scored six times at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and added four more at Italia '90.

"It's good, and it's not the end," Tuchel said when asked about Kane reaching the milestone.

It also extended his tally to 18 goals across major international tournaments, further underlining his status as one of England's greatest-ever forwards.

The Bayern Munich striker had drawn level with Lineker by scoring twice in England's opening 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Following that performance, Lineker himself hailed Kane as the "greatest English striker we've ever had".

His team-mate Jude Bellingham, meanwhile, labelled Kane "the best".

"He continues to raise his level and it is incredible," Bellingham told ITV. "It's everything he deserves. You see the effort he puts in as captain and how he leads us.

"His quality speaks for itself, he is the best."

Kane's latest milestone caps another outstanding season for club and country, with the prolific 32-year-old now boasting 70 goals across all competitions for Bayern Munich and England.

How Kane reached the record

Kane now has 82 goals in 117 caps for England, more than any other player but still quite a way off the all-time record goalscorer at international level, Cristiano Ronaldo (145), and Lionel Messi, who has 122 goals for Argentina.

Since making his England debut in 2015, Kane's rise has been relentless.

He announced himself on the international stage by scoring just 80 seconds into his debut appearance against Lithuania in a Euro 2016 qualifier, before surpassing Wayne Rooney's long-standing England goalscoring record in March 2023 with his 54th international goal.

His new record is the culmination of a remarkable World Cup career that has spanned three tournaments.

His brace in England's opening victory over Croatia made him only the second England men's player to score at three different World Cups, joining David Beckham, who found the net in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker laid the foundations for his World Cup legacy at Russia 2018, where he scored six times to claim the Golden Boot as the tournament's leading marksman.

His haul included a hat-trick against Panama, a brace against Tunisia during the group stage, and another penalty in England's last-16 clash with Colombia.

Although Kane found the net only twice at Qatar 2022 - one against Senegal in the last 16 and one in England's quarter-final meeting with France - he remained a pivotal figure in England's attack, contributing three assists as well as his goals.

His latest strike against Panama has now taken him clear at the top of England's all-time World Cup scoring charts, adding another milestone to an already extraordinary international career.
