On the eve of England's World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas, Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento has been ruled out of the tournament through injury.

Livramento was in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man squad and in line to make his first World Cup appearance this summer.

However, he has been ruled out of the tournament, and has subsequently withdrawn from the squad.

A statement released by England on Tuesday said "we're gutted" for Livramento, and wished him a speedy recovery.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is stepping in to replace Livramento, and will link up with the squad following Wednesday's match against Croatia.

Chalobah typically operates at centre back, thus is not a like-for-like switch, but bolsters England's defensive options.

The withdrawal of Livramento is a blow for England, with the 23-year-old a versatile squad option, able to play on the left and right of defence. Reports state that he suffered the injury during a training session on Sunday.

It compounds more injury frustration for Livramento, who was limited to 26 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle during the 2025/26 campaign due to knee, hamstring and thigh issues.

FIFA regulations state that any changes to a nation's World Cup squad must be made no later than 24 hours before a fixture, and that the injured player must be replaced by a member of the provisional 55-player squad, which is named before the final 26-player squad is submitted.

With Chalobah set to join Tuchel's squad, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Lewis Hall and Myles Lewis-Skelly are among the defenders to have been overlooked.

Livramento has earned six caps for England since making his senior international debut in November 2024.

Having represented his country in various youth age categories, this summer's World Cup call-up was his first for a major tournament with the senior team.

He played 45 minutes during England's warm-up friendly against New Zealand, and was an unused substitute in the subsequent 3-0 victory against Costa Rica.

England open their Group L campaign against Croatia, before they face Ghana in Boston next Tuesday and then Panama in New Jersey on June 27.
