Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old 'genius' spearheading Morocco's 2026 World Cup run to quarter-finals and set for big-money summer move

The World Cup is ripe for a breakout star. And the 2026 edition in North America is no different, with 18-year-old midfield sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi the latest to catch the eye as Morocco made their way through the tournament.

Bouaddi has put in composed performances from the heart of midfield to guide Morocco to the quarter-finals of the tournament where they faced France, the country he was born and raised in.

What makes Bouaddi's displays so astounding is that he is still a teenager and has yet to be swayed by the stage he is performing on.

TNT Sports expert Julien Laurens - who is in North America working for ESPN - describes Bouaddi as a "genius football-wise," and harks back to a game in the UEFA Champions League as to when he first became aware of the midfielder's potential.

"Lille played Real Madrid two years ago on his birthday. He turned 17 that day and Lille won 1-0 in the group stage," Laurens explained. "And he was just outstanding.

"He was the best player on the pitch on the day of his 17th birthday. He was just incredible, really. And I think we remembered Eduardo Camavinga when he was still at Rennes, bossing a game against PSG when he was 16 in midfield. And I had a similar vibe of somebody that young who's already that good against the best team in the world really at the time.

"It was like peak Real Madrid. And he was the best player on the pitch. You don't really start that young if you're not special. And then you don't boss the Real Madrid midfield in the Champions League at 17 if you're not special either."

Bouaddi came through the Lille youth system, as well as featuring for France's youth teams at the international level - he would eventually switch allegiances to Morocco.

He signed his first professional contract with the French club in August 2023, before making his senior debut in a UEFA Conference League match at just 16 years and three days old. In doing so, he became the youngest player ever to feature in a European club competition game.

Laurens explained that Lille "quickly realised that they had an absolute gem on their hands," but in more ways than one.

"Not just all the footballing ability - the size of him because he's quite tall - but also how smart he is," Laurens said.

"He did the baccalaureate, he's starting a university degree because he wants to still learn school stuff when really he could have stopped school at 16, like a lot of them do, because it was so obvious that he was already playing for the first team and was going to make it.

"And so on and off the pitch, I think a prodigy, not far from probably a genius football-wise. And then a very smart kid with really grounded parents off the field."

The game against Madrid on his 17th birthday - the Lille fans sang 'Joyeux Anniversaire' (Happy Birthday) after the win - was his real coming out party on the global stage, comfortably competing with players much his senior.

And for Laurens, it is Bouaddi's composure at such a young age which has impressed him the most, comparing him to other great midfielders who also burst onto the scene, including Clarence Seedorf, Didier Deschamps, Cesc Fabregas and Camavinga.

"I think those players - outside of the talent they have or the physicality, whatever the skill set is - I think the one thing for me that makes them different and special is the maturity," he said.

"They don't behave like 18-year-olds or 17-year-olds. I would say that's the big difference is that they're already playing like a 30-year-old. Bouaddi is certainly like that.

"If you blur his face, for example, on the footage and just show people videos of him playing, they would not say he's 18 and has such a baby face."

Bidding war?

Such has been Bouaddi's explosion that he is now being tipped as one of the hottest prospects in world football.

He already has 96 professional appearances for Lille, and is being linked to some of the biggest clubs across Europe, including Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

In December last year, he signed a new contract that runs until 2029, but given the rumoured interest in him, Lille could command a huge transfer fee for Bouaddi.

In fact, Lille president Olivier Letang recently said the 18-year-old is worth more than the transfer fees spent on Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali this summer.

Anderson moved from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City for a fee reportedly around £116 million, while Sandro Tonali could join Tottenham Hotspur for a sum believed to be around £100m.

According to Opta statistics comparing the three midfielders, Anderson ranks first in many of the key areas - including tackles, duels won, dribbles completed and passing accuracy - with Bouaddi second in a host of categories.

With many clubs circling, Laurens predicts a "bidding war" which could inflate Bouaddi's price tag, and stressed the importance of making the best move for his career.

Laurens draws comparisons to Camavinga's move to Real Madrid in 2021, saying he thought at the time: "This is very early and very young to go to Real Madrid.

"I think it's a bit the same for Bouaddi. As often in a career for players so young, I think that first step, especially if it's abroad and that big move for a lot of money with big wages, is huge," he said.

"It makes most of the difference. So he can't get this one wrong. I think he could have moved last summer. I think it was quite smart from him and his dad not to move last summer. And then he extended his contract with Lille but with an agreement that they would let him go for the right price, which will be this summer.

"But even this summer he's still only 18. He will only turn 19 on October 2. So even this call has to be the right call."
