Liverpool and Newcastle United reportedly look set to compete for the signing of Brentford's improving striker Bryan Mbeumo in the summer, while Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract impasse at Anfield rumbles on. Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers are planning to sign a central defender in January, and both Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson are linked with leaving Manchester City.

Mbeumo in demand
Liverpool and Newcastle United are both keen on Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo and could do battle next summer.
The forward has been one of the most impressive performers of the season and is attracting interest.
The Daily Mail explains: "Arne Slot's Reds have been flying of late and currently sit top of the tree. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe's side are just one point adrift from the top four after a recent return to winning form.
"The Newcastle boss is an admirer of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo who has been lighting up the top flight for Thomas Frank's side of late, scoring eight Premier League goals so far this campaign.
"But they will face competition from Liverpool. With [Mohamed] Salah's contract set to expire at the end of the season, Mbeumo could potentially prove a sharp bit of business for Slot, who has reportedly been impressed with his performances for The Bees."
No progress on Alexander-Arnold contract
Liverpool have made no serious progress on a new contract for defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The homegrown player is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January, a situation that also applies to Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
The Mirror writes: "There remains no breakthrough in contract talks between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool.
"But as we start to get close to Jingle Bells time, nerves continue to jangle over the future of the Reds right-back. Maybe even more than they are for Mo Salah or Virgil van Dijk.
"There is growing unease among supporters because January nears and that allows players like Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk to speak to foreign clubs.
"Liverpool, much like bitter rivals Manchester United, adore having one of their own in their team. But, at 26, Alexander-Arnold has much to ponder. This could be the biggest contract he signs in his career, with the next one likely to be when he's entering or in his 30s."
Wolves target defender
Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers hope to sign a new central defender in January.
The Telegraph reports that Gary O'Neil will look to strengthen at the back in the coming transfer window.
The paper states: "Wolves are looking to prioritise the signing of a new centre-back in the January transfer window to fix their leaky defence.
"Gary O'Neil, the club's head coach, has endured a difficult start to the Premier League season and Wolves are planning ahead with funds to be made available to sign a defender early next year, either permanently or on loan.
"Wolves have conceded a league-high 27 goals this season and expect to be without Yerson Mosquera for the remainder of the campaign after the Colombian sustained a serious knee injury in the 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa in September.
"O'Neil has only three senior centre-backs in Craig Dawson, Santiago Bueno and Toti Gomes, while teenager Bastien Meupiyou is yet to make an appearance since signing from Nantes."
Ederson and De Bruyne linked with summer moves
The Evening Standard reports that both Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne could leave Manchester City this summer.
The duo were both linked with exits last season, and rumours are resurfacing now.
The paper reports: "The goalkeeper was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer, but ended up staying put.
"[Ederson] has been a mainstay in the City team since joining in 2017, however the club could be tempted to cash in.
"Ederson's understudy, Stefan Ortega, has performed well when given the chance and is said to be eager for more game time.
"City could also look to dip into the transfer market to replace Ederson, who has admitted his head was turned in the summer by the huge wages on offer in Saudi.
"[De Bruyne] was another City player linked with a lucrative move to the Middle East during the most recent transfer window.
"The 33-year-old has also been tipped for a possible switch to Major League Soccer (MLS) and his contract is due to expire at the end of this season."
