The paper reports: “Atletico Madrid are in advanced talks over a move for Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

“Gallagher is expected to return to Cobham for pre-season this week following Euro 2024 with his future uncertain and Enzo Maresca admitting "anything can happen".

“Chelsea initially valued the academy graduate, who captained the side for the majority of last season, at £50 million - but may accept a lower fee to get a deal done.

“Madrid, who are also interested in Spain international Mikel Merino, are unlikely to have the funds to hit the £50m valuation but are hopeful a move can happen.”

Thiago Injury may affect Toney future

There are suggestions from The Athletic that Brentford could now keep Ivan Toney for the rest of his contract.

Igor Thiago suffered a knee injury which will keep him out for some time, meaning Toney might not be allowed to leave.

The website states: “The club view Thiago as a successor to Ivan Toney, which means the Brazilian’s injury could impact the England international’s future.

“Brentford may look to hold onto Toney, who has scored 72 times in 141 appearances since he joined them from Peterborough United for £5m in August 2020. Toney, 28, wants to leave this summer but has only a year left on his contract.

“Rather than leave on a free transfer in 11 months, Brentford would prefer to sell Toney this summer for what they regard as fair market value.

“Last summer, Toney would have been worth between £80 million and £100 million — but his long-term betting ban and injury have changed that. Sources at his club value him at more than £50m, depending on interest from elsewhere.”

Gomez ready to quit Liverpool

The Mirror believes that Joe Gomez would consider a move away from Liverpool. The central defender wants regular game time but has been frustrated at Anfield.

The paper explains: “Liverpool may have to enter the market for a new defender if Joe Gomez does opt to pursue a transfer away from Anfield.

“The England defender has been at the club since 2015 but has been unable to establish himself as an obvious starter and a desire for more game time is keeping his mind open. Joel Matip has just left but the emergence of Jarell Quansah to play alongside Virgil van Dijk means competition remains strong.

“Gomez's versatility has long been a major asset for him and the Reds, but he was linked with a switch to Newcastle. The Magpies remain keen and the 27-year-old was potentially going to be part of a £45 million deal that would've seen Anthony Gordon head to Anfield.”

Man United close in on Sandberg

Manchester United Women are on course to secure the transfer of Anna Sandberg from BK Hacken.

The 21-year-old defender would cost more than £150,000, reports the Guardian newspaper.

The report begins: “Manchester United are poised to sign Anna Sandberg from BK Hacken for what will be a record transfer fee for a Swedish player.

“The 21-year-old full-back is understood to have completed a medical at United on Tuesday and is close to becoming the English club’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Dominique Janssen, Elisabeth Terland and Melvine Malard.

“Sandberg was part of the Sweden squad that finished third at last year’s World Cup and has long been considered one of Scandinavian football’s brightest young talents. The fee is undisclosed but is understood to comfortably be in excess of the reported £150,000 Everton paid to Rosengard for Hanna Bennison in 2021.”
