Ruben Amorim gives ‘credit’ to Manchester United for 'fully deserved' win and defends Patrick Dorgu after red card

Manchester United held on for a 3-2 win against Ipswich Town after losing defender Patrick Dorgu to a first-half red card. Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, manager Ruben Amorim praised his side's mentality, and also defended Dorgu, saying the former Lecce wing-back was ready for the Premier League despite his foul on Ipswich midfielder Omari Hutchinson.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised his side for their 3-2 comeback win over Ipswich Town and defended Patrick Dorgu after his red card.

United suffered an early setback when a mix-up between Dorgu and goalkeeper Andre Onana allowed Jaden Philogene in to open the scoring.

A Sam Morsy own goal and a Matthijs de Ligt close-range effort gave United a 2-1 lead, and they looked to be more confident than in recent matches.

However, Dorgu’s studs-up challenge on Omari Hutchinson saw him sent off, and Philogene made it 2-2 with a low cross that crept into the far post.

After the restart for the second half, Harry Maguire nodded United back in front and they held onto the lead for three points.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the win, Amorim was much happier with his side’s efforts than he had been in recent weeks.

He began: "Today I’m not frustrated - of course, with the situations of the game you get a little frustrated because we were controlling the game. We suffer a goal, one mistake. That can happen. But from the first moment, I felt the players were fine, we were trying to play.

"We scored two goals and then the sending-off changed the game a little bit. But the fight that the guys showed, and especially our fans helped us a lot. I think we fully deserved the three points today.

"Of course, we have to enjoy life, but there are some moments which are really hard. But that is natural in every profession. You need to suffer in some moments to enjoy the good moments. We have to pass this moment and think of the next game, not in the past. We need to prepare for the next one."

Asked about Dorgu and whether his red card betrayed a naivety that calls into question his readiness for English football, Amorim downplayed any concerns.

He answered: "He’s ready because he proved that in the last game. Any player can make a mistake like today. The sending-off, he wanted to play the ball. Maybe he’s a little bit harsh, the way he went for the ball. He’s clearly ready, he’s inexperienced but he’s ready for the Premier League.

"People judge right away. Last week he was OK, a good performance against Everton. Now they will say he’s not experienced enough in the Premier League. I don’t feel that way."

Amorim suggested there had been a change in mentality with the players’ performance, in contrast to the poor showing for much of their 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend.

"It’s just a game, but I felt we started the game in a different way," he said.

"You can feel it in the way we controlled the possession. We were more calm with the ball, minus the goal.

"But for that, I give more credit to my players, because even with that we managed to control the game, the tempo of the game, to create situations to turn the game around.

"They did a great job."
