Eddie Howe to miss Newcastle United's Premier League games with Crystal Palace and Aston Villa as he recovers from pneumonia

Newcastle United have provided an update on the condition of manager Eddie Howe after he was admitted to hospital last week. The club have confirmed Howe has been fighting pneumonia, and he will miss this week's games with Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Howe said "I look forward to being back as soon as possible." The Magpies are fourth in the Premier League table.

Newcastle United have confirmed manager Eddie Howe will miss this week’s matches against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa after revealing he is recovering from pneumonia.
The Magpies said last week that their manager had been admitted to hospital after "feeling unwell for a number of days".
They said at the time that Howe was conscious and talking to his family, but would not be in the dugout for Sunday’s game with Manchester United.
Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones led Newcastle to a 4-1 win over The Red Devils, and they will be in charge for the matches with Palace on Wednesday and Villa on Saturday.
While he remained in hospital, Howe provided an update on his condition.
"A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes," he said. "They have meant a lot to me and my family.
"I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I'm immensely grateful for the specialist care I'm receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible."
12/04/25 - Howe admitted to hospital
Eddie Howe has been admitted to hospital and will miss Newcastle United's Premier League meeting with Manchester United on Sunday.
The club confirmed the news with a statement issued on Saturday, which said Howe was admitted to hospital late on Friday "having felt unwell for a number of days".
The statement added: "Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.
"Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course."
The club confirmed assistant head coaches Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones would lead the team for Sunday's match against Man Utd, and said they are to be "supported by the club's first team staff".
So far this season, Howe has led his side into UEFA Champions League contention, with Newcastle sitting seventh in the Premier League table ahead of Sunday's clash at St James' Park.
A victory could see Newcastle rise as high as fourth in the Premier League table. They sit just four points off third-placed Nottingham Forest, within a congested fight for a top-five finish.
In Howe's absence, Tindall took Friday's pre-match press conference. At that time, he expected Howe would be "fine" to be in the dug-out for the Man Utd match.
Former Bournemouth boss Howe became the first Newcastle manager since 1955 to win domestic silverware at the club in March, when he led his side to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle have won four consecutive matches across all competitions, and are hunting their second appearance in the Champions League under Howe - following their participation in the 2023/24 edition.
