Eberechi Eze: Disallowed goal 'could have changed game' as bizarre refereeing 'mistake' costs Crystal Palace v Brentford
Updated 18/08/2024 at 20:11 GMT+1
Eberechi Eze scored a wonderful free-kick during Crystal Palace's opening game of the Premier League season at Brentford on Sunday, but it was controversially ruled out. Eze said referee Sam Barrott admitted he had made a "mistake". Eze also said the goal could have changed the game but stressed The Eagles had to "deal with it", while his boss Oliver Glasner felt it made "no sense" to complain.

Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze said referee Sam Barrott told him that he had made a “mistake” in disallowing his brilliant goal in the defeat to Brentford in the Premier League.
England international Eze thought he had broken the deadlock when he scored a wonderfully audacious free-kick in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.
However, the goal was chalked off after referee Barrott had already given a foul after Palace midfielder Will Hughes had clashed with Brentford defender Nathan Collins.
That meant VAR could not intervene, as explained in a post from the Premier League's new match centre account on social media platform X.
“The referee awards a free-kick to Brentford for a foul by Hughes on Collins. The whistle was blown before the ball entered the goal, so VAR cannot intervene and the referee's call stands,” the post read.
Just minutes later, Brentford took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo and would ultimately win 2-1, despite leaving Ivan Toney out of the squad amid transfer links away from the club.
"I was told [by the referee] that he blew too early and made the mistake," Eze told BBC Match of the Day. "It could have changed the game but we have to deal with it."

Eagles boss Oliver Glasner said it “makes no sense to complain” about the decision.
"When you lose it is always disappointing in a game like this," he told the BBC. "We don't look for excuses or complain about anything.
“We had many opportunities to create chances. When you concede two goals it's difficult because we have to score three. We will analyse it and have more compactness in defence. We are disappointed today.
“It makes no sense to complain now. We won't get this goal back for a draw. We had a great reaction after the 1-0 at half-time and played well in the second half.”
