Erik ten Hag to remain Manchester United manager and begin talks for contract extension - reports

Erik ten Hag will remain as Manchester United manager for the start of the 2024/25 campaign, according to widespread reports.

The Dutchman came under intense pressure last season as the Red Devils fell short in their attempts to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

However, his prospects of remaining at Old Trafford were boosted by lifting the FA Cup thanks to a memorable 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Manchester City at Wembley.

Following that game, the club reportedly instigated an internal review as they looked to make a swift decision on the manager's future.

Ten Hag, 54, initially took the reins in 2022, replacing Ralf Rangnick, who was interim manager following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

He guided the team to third place in the Premier League in his debut campaign, while they also lifted the Carabao Cup.

However, things took a turn this season, with United losing six of their opening 10 matches across all competitions.

They eventually failed to get out of their group in the Champions League, while their eighth place finish in the top flight is their lowest since 1989/90.

That led to mounting criticism from some supporters, but after the FA Cup success, a defiant Ten Hag said: "If they don't want me, I will go anywhere else to win trophies."

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna had been linked with replacing the Dutchman, as had ex-Bayern Munich and Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Ten Hag will not be leaving Old Trafford though, with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford deciding to stick, not twist.

It is now understood the Red Devils will enter contract negotiations with the manager.

He only has 12 months left to run on his current deal, which also has the option of a further year.
