The Portuguese coach helped transform Chelsea into one of Europe’s most decorated football clubs, winning three Premier League titles and an FA Cup across two spells with the west London side.

He also enjoyed success with Manchester United in the 2010s, winning the Carabao Cup and UEFA Europa League during his time at Old Trafford.

His spell with Tottenham Hotspur may have ended in disappointment, but it did not detract from a remarkable career in management that has seen him win the UEFA Champions League twice.

He is currently managing Benfica, who are competing in this season’s Champions League, and he will take the Portuguese giants to one of the Premier League’s most iconic grounds on Tuesday.

They will travel to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United in their third league phase clash of the campaign.

Benfica will be desperate to secure their first points in this season’s Champions League, having fallen to defeat in their opening two fixtures.

They were beaten 3-2 by Qarabag in their first match before falling to a 1-0 loss against Mourinho’s beloved Chelsea.

However, if Mourinho’s record at St James’ Park is anything to go by, Benfica fans should not get their hopes up too much ahead of the crucial clash.

Mourinho has taken on Newcastle at St James’ Park on 12 occasions during his illustrious career.

However, despite his remarkable record in the Premier League, he has struggled to beat them at the famous ground.

He has only won three of those 12 fixtures, drawing four of them and losing five.

To make matters worse for Benfica, Mourinho has found victories particularly hard to come by in recent years.

He has won just one of his last seven matches at St James’ Park, drawing three and losing three.

This will be his first visit to Newcastle since April 2021, when his Spurs side drew 2-2.

His first win at the stadium came on his first visit in November 2004, when Chelsea defeated Newcastle 2-0 in the League Cup.

He also beat them 1-0 in the same competition with Chelsea in 2006, with his only Premier League victory at St James’ Park coming with Spurs in July 2020.
