Bayern Munich insist there is 'more to come' in their UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg after classic against Paris Saint-Germain

After arguably the best UEFA Champions League semi-final of all time on Tuesday night, Bayern Munich reiterated that the tie is not over yet.

Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain played out an immediate classic at the Parc des Princes, with the French side eventually prevailing 5-4.

The reigning champions had led 5-2 early in the second half but two quickfire goals reduced the deficit to one before the second leg next Wednesday in Munich, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

And with a spot in the final on the line, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich stressed that no one should rule out the German league champions.

"I think it was to be expected that it would be end-to-end, but I didn’t expect it to be so open. It feels strange after the match because we lost – by one goal," the 31-year-old said.

"We were three goals down at one point, came back and had the feeling we actually should’ve equalised. Particularly at the end, Paris looked tired, they had cramps and were playing for time.

"We certainly felt we had a chance. However, we certainly showed a very good reaction. Okay, they had another counter and hit the bar, but overall you have the feeling there’s more to come."

The nine goals was the joint-most in Champions League or European Cup semi-finals history, tied with Frankfurt's 6-3 triumph away to Rangers in 1959/60.

It could have been even more with Senna Mayulu hitting the bar late in the second half.

Bayern have not won a Champions League semi-final since winning the competition in 2020 during the Covid-19-affected season, beating PSG in the final coincidentally.

Since then, they have been knocked out at the semi-final stage once by Real Madrid and in the quarter-finals on four occasions.

Additionally, PSG prevailed over Bayern in the quarter-finals of last year's FIFA Club World Cup, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele.

But this time round, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany - who was not on the sideline for Tuesday's game because of suspension - is hoping to go one step further and book their spot in this year's final in Budapest, Hungary.

"[The second leg] can’t come quick enough. We can’t ask for more. We’re against the best side in Europe because they’re the reigning champions," Kompany said. "The result is still in the balance.

"But we need the stadium to have an impact. It’s a legendary place, where this club has achieved so many great things. We can’t hope for anything better. We’ll take what we have, and we’ll work on what we can do better."

The goal-laden first leg means that for the first time in Champions League history, two teams have surpassed the 40-goal barrier in a single edition, with both PSG and Bayern reaching the mark in Tuesday's game.

Bayern have recent history of prevailing in goal-heavy Champions League two-legged affairs, beating Real Madrid in this year's quarter-finals 6-4 on aggregate after a thrilling 4-3 victory at home in the second leg.

And Kompany says he's hoping to harness some of that energy to overcome their one-goal deficit against PSG.

"Four goals in Paris shows that we can score goals. And we’ll show that again at home. We have a week now to work on the things we need to improve," he said.

"The belief is 100% there, as is the feeling. We need our fans and their support with the same passion we had against Madrid.”
