Pep Guardiola: Manchester City manager apologises for self-harm comment after UEFA Champions League draw

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said at a press conference on Tuesday night that, "I want to harm myself", in reference to scratches on his head following the 3-3 UEFA Champions League draw with Feyenoord. Writing on social media on Wednesday, he apologised to those believing he had made light of self-harm, and said he had been surprised by questions over the cuts.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologised after joking that he wished to harm himself in a press conference on Tuesday night.

Guardiola was speaking after his side’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord, where he appeared to have a scratched nose as well as bright red marks on his head.

The Spaniard explained that a nail on his finger had opened up an existing, small cut on his nose.

"Yes, it's from my nail on my finger," Guardiola replied. "I cut myself with my fingernail."

He also then said: "I want to harm myself," and smiled, before leaving the press conference.

Some observers had worried that his statement was a genuine expression of distress, and on his social media account, he clarified what he meant.

He wrote: "I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this.

"My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self harm.

"I know that many people struggle with mental health issues every day, and I would like to take this moment to highlight one of the ways in [which] people can seek help, by calling the Samaritans hotline on 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.org."

Guardiola has overseen a streak of five losses and one draw in recent months, the worst run in his time at the club.

He has recently agreed a new two-year contract to bring to an end speculation over his future.
