Harry Kane notched his 28th goal of the season in 22 appearances for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Saturday afternoon, when his side defeated Stuttgart in a 5-0 away victory. Speaking after the win, Kane explained that he had been rested for the first half, though it did not prevent the substitute from netting a second-half hat-trick for the visitors.

Harry Kane said that his Bayern Munich side "punished" Stuttgart as the England captain scored a hat-trick after coming off the bench.

Kane was rested for the first half of the Bundesliga tie as Bayern stretched their lead at the top to eight points with the victory, but was introduced in the second half as Vincent Kompany’s men led 1-0, and made certain of the points with a 22-minute triple.

Konrad Laimer had scored the opener for the visitors on 11 minutes, and Stuttgart had a Nikolas Nartey header ruled out for offside.

Denis Undav came close to an equaliser on 59 minutes, but Jonas Urbig was equal to the challenge and pushed the effort over the bar.

Kane transformed the match and seven minutes after Undav’s shot, he doubled his side’s lead. Josip Stanisic, another Bayern substitute, then beat Alexander Nubel with what looked to be a tame shot.

With 10 minutes of normal time remaining, Lorenz Assignon was sent off for a handball in the penalty area, and Kane converted the spot-kick to make a brace.

On 88 minutes, former Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise cut a cross back for Kane to complete his hat-trick, taking him to 17 league goals for the season so far.

Speaking after the win, Kane explained that the club’s Belgian manager had wanted to make sure that he stayed sharp after a busy run of games, with Bayern beating Union Berlin 3-2 in the German Cup on Wednesday to reach the tournament’s quarter-finals.

"It’s something I’m not used to, but I did it a couple of times this season," he said.

"The boss wanted to keep me fresh and save energy. I came on after 60 minutes with a couple of other guys, and we were able to exploit the space and get the goals.

"We had a tough battle in the cup midweek, and today we faced one of the best teams in the league away, but we looked stronger in the last half an hour and punished them."

The 32-year-old's 17 league goals have come in just 13 appearances in the current campaign. In all competitions, he has 28 goals in 22 appearances for his club.

In 2025, Kane has scored 58 goals so far for his club side and the England national team, beating his previous tally for a year of 56, set in 2017.

Bayern will play in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening against Portuguese side Sporting CP, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, and they then host Mainz the following Sunday.

Their last game before the German winter break is a trip to Heidenheim on December 21.
