Liverpool Women appoint ex-Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor as new head coach on three-year contract

Liverpool Women have a new permanent head coach: Gareth Taylor. The 52-year-old will take on his second assignment in management, having spent almost 14 years as a coach at Manchester City, with close to five seasons in charge of the women's team. Managing director Andy O'Boyle called Taylor "the outstanding candidate" as The Reds look to make the next step in the Women's Super League.

Liverpool Women have officially announced Gareth Taylor as their new head coach, five months after the Englishman departed Manchester City.
The Merseyside club had been searching for a permanent manager since current Burnley boss Matt Beard left The Reds in February, with Amber Whiteley taking interim charge for the remainder of the season.
It will only be the second club at which Taylor has coached, having arrived at Manchester City in September 2011, immediately after bringing an end to an 18-year playing career.
Taylor will be tasked with taking Liverpool higher than the fourth-place finish they achieved last term, their best Women's Super League season since winning the title in 2014.
"I am delighted to have been appointed as Liverpool’s new head coach," Taylor told Liverpool's official website. "Everyone in football knows about the history, size and potential of this club, and I am really looking forward to the task ahead.
"Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way."
Taylor spent almost five years at the helm of City, winning the delayed 2020 FA Cup final in his first campaign.
City also picked up the FA Women's League Cup in 2022 under the leadership of the former Wales international, who collected four WSL Manager of the Month awards during his tenure.
Liverpool Women managing director Andy O’Boyle called Taylor "the outstanding candidate" to take Liverpool to the next step.
"I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Gareth to the club. This has been a very detailed process and it was clear that Gareth was the outstanding candidate.
"He has a proven track record of building successful, identity-driven teams and his ability to develop players and help them reach the next level is second to none.
"We have a very clear vision of how we will return LFC Women to the upper echelons of the game and this is a crucial step on that journey.

In each of the four full seasons under Taylor, City finished inside the top four, with two campaigns ending in runner-up spots.
Taylor also saw his side reach the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals twice, in 2020/21 and 2024/25.
The 52-year-old's first assignment comes in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa on Saturday, August 9, before The Reds get their WSL season underway against Everton on September 7.
